CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background

Human beings as social individuals and as citizens need to develop the

ability themselves to be living in the midst of the community. One way to increase

knowledge is through educational path. Purpose of education is growing

knowledge and skills as part of one generation to the next. One way to achieve a

good education is by applying the approach to learning in the process of teaching

and learning activities. Determining learning approaches is to determine the

achievement of a teaching-learning process affective and efficient so that the good

result achieved. Teaching and learning activities that are conducted teacher. In

teaching, teacher do not merely explain and convey some lesson material to

students, but teacher should always provide stimulation and encouragement for

student to self-learning process occurs. Therefore, every teacher needs to master

the method or approach to teaching and can manage a good grade, so capable of

creating a conducive climate.

Learning success is influenced by someone besides learning methods

applied by the attitude of the students, a person’s attitude determines the success

of the study. Attitudes or interest can foster a learning attitude. Factors that

influence the development and formation of children’s attitudes that need to be

considered in are; maturity (marutation), the physical state of the child, family

influences, social environment, school life, wovies, teacher, school, curriculum,

and how teacher teach.

There are some factors causing of students’ learning problems. According

to Muhibbin Syah (2005:173), causal factors of students’ learning problem are

divided into two categories: they are internal and external factors. The internal

factors include cognitive, affective and psychomotor. Meanwhile the external

factors include family, society, and school environment (school building

condition, the teacher and learning facilities). According to Abu Ahmadi and

Widodo Supriyono (2004:78), the clasiify causal factors of students’ learning

problem into two categories: internal, which include sphysiology factor and

psychology factor, and external, which include social, family, and school.

Interest in learning is one of the factors supporting the success of the

learning process. In addition, interest is also a supporting factor to student success

is activities, therefore learning interests need special attention from theacher to

help facilitate in guiding and directing children in learning. To achieve good

learning outcomes needed to support the learning methods of students in activities

teaching and learning. If an institution has a good learning method and the

students have learned a good interest will surely produce a satisfactory learning

outcomes.

The English teacher assumes that they needs to work hard to get students

interested in learning. They realized that in the process of teaching and learning

they needs various methods in learning English, so that students will be interested

to learn English for example in listening lessons here the teacher must provide

learning methods that can keep students focused to listen. Some students say that

they do not understand when the teacher gives English lessons such as listening

lessons because English is a difficult lesson. They do not know the meaning of the

question as they perform the test and English is a different subject between

writing, reading, and giving meaning.

When doing observation in SMP Negeri 2 Baubau, researcher found there

were many students were bored during the lesson, made noisy, they were always

disturb their friends, when they listen they always do not focus, and they focus on

one word that they listen. They always look dictionary when they listen.

Considering that the role of interest in learning and based on the above

background, the writers are interested to conduct research on “The effect of

learning interest on the listening proficiency at the eighth grade students of SMP

Negeri 2 Baubau “

B. Identification of the Problem

Based on the background above, the problem can be identification as follow:

1. The students feel bored in follow the lesson.

2. The students made noisy.

3. The students disturb their friends.

4. The students always look dictionary when they listen.

C. Problem Statement

From the background above, the problem statement is “ is there any effect

of learning interest on the listening proficiency at the grade students of SMP

Negeri 2 Baubau.

D. Scope of the Research

The scope of the research is focus on the effect of learning interest on the

listening proficiency at the class VIII 7 SMP Negeri 2 Baubau.

E. Objective of the Research

The purpose of the research is to know the effect of learning interest on the

listening proficiency at the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Baubau.

F. Significant of the Research

The benefit of the research is how the effect of learning interest on the

listening proficiency at the eight students of SMP Negeri 2 Baubau.
