    Indonesia faced the challenge of reducing its high maternal mortality rate. Maternal mortality in Indonesia remained one of the highest in Southeast Asia, with estimates of 390 deaths per 100,000 live births. The government aimed to reduce the rate to 228 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2000 through improving access to quality maternal health services, especially in rural areas. Monitoring maternal deaths and their causes was also important to help address the factors contributing to mortality.
