In 1982, Horowitz began using anti-depressant medications; there were reports that

he was drinking as well.


Consequently, his playing underwent a perceptible decline. His 1983 performances in
Japan and The United States were
marred by memory lapses, wrong notes and a loss of physical control. He stopped
playing in public for the next two years.
By1985, Horowitz, no longer taking medication or drinking alcohol, returned to
performing and recording and was back
on form.
