ARTICLE ON GEOMETRY IN

OUR DAILY LIFE

Shefi Sebastine *

ABSTRACT
The main objective of the study is to make students aware
about the geometry and its life applications. Some students are do not
like mathematics for the reason that they are scared of it and do not
feel like they are able to understand the concept. This project is
mainly designed for students, because geometry is a part of our life.
In this world all things are related to geometrical shapes, patterns
designs etc. Mathematical thinking and reasoning begins for students
long before it is taught through schoolings. Beginning as infants,
humans are attracted to patterns, designs, and shapes. Parents
reinforce this by often purchasing toys or mobiles with brightly
coloured shapes, pictures or designs. I assume that the students will be
able to understand the basic concept of geometry and to be able to
understand the wonder’s of the world’s shapes and understand the
knowledge of spatial use. Also they acquire the thorough knowledge
on the topic geometry and its real life applications. And thus they may
develop the skill of problem solving and observing the given situation
suitable using geometry.

INTRODUCTION

Geometry is a subject in mathematics that focuses on the

study of shapes, sizes, relative configurations, and spatial properties.
Derived from the Greek word meaning "earth measurement,"
geometry is one of the oldest sciences. It was first formally organized
by the Greek mathematician Euclid around 300 BC when he arranged
465 geometric propositions into 13 books, titled 'Elements'. This,
however, was not the first time geometry had been utilized. As a
matter of fact, there exists evidence to believe that geometry dates all
the way back to 3,000 BC in ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt!
Geometry has been the subject of countless developments. As a result,
many types of geometry exist, including Euclidean geometry, non-
Euclidean geometry, Riemannian geometry, algebraic geometry, and
simplistic geometry.

This discussion primarily focuses on the properties of lines,

points, and angles. We will also place emphasis on geometric
measurements including lengths, areas, and volumes of various
shapes. By the end of this section it won't be hard to see that geometry
is all around us!

Geometry plays a vital role in everyday life. Practical

application of geometry is abundant. Geometry is useful in making
things especially in construction works like houses, bridges,
monuments and any other things. Geometry tools are also used in
everyday life. Pi (π) one of the important developments in geometry
which is used in different fields.

2
The earliest recorded beginnings of geometry can be traced
to ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt in the 2nd millennium BC. Early
geometry was a collection of empirically discovered principles
concerning lengths, angles, areas, and volumes, which were
developed to meet some practical need in surveying ,
construction, astronomy, and various crafts.
In the 7th century, the Greek mathematician Thales of
Miletus used geometry to solve problems such as calculating the
height of pyramids and the distance of ships from the shore. He is
credited with the first use of deductive reasoning applied to geometry,
by deriving four corollaries to Thales' Theorem.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the project “GEOMETRY AND IT’S

REAL LIFE APPLICATIONS” is to make students aware of the topic
and its applications.
The main objective is to become familiar with the fact that
geometry can be used in real life to find the height of certain things
and width of many others. The construction of buildings, houses etc
have an in geometry. The geometry plays a very important role in our
day to day life. Many examples involving different geometrical
properties of triangles and circles could be examined. We can do lot
of things which are impossible to measure; for example, measuring
height of tree, height of buildings etc.

3
In particular, in the given project discover the situations in
which properties of similar triangles learnt in the classroom are
useful.

HYPOTHESIS

I assume that the students will be able to understand the

basic concept of geometry and to be able to understand the wonder’s
of the world ‘shape and understand the knowledge of spatial use. In
other words the areas related to space and the position, size shapes of
things in it. Students must be able to understand the geometry will
assist us in doing that because it provides the knowledge of how to
deal with measurements and relationships of lines, angles, surfaces
and solids. Also they acquire the thorough knowledge on the topic
and its real life applications. And thus they may develop the skill of
problem solving and observing the given situation suitable using
geometry.

APPLICATIONS OF GEOMETRY
IN OUR DAILY LIFE

“Geometry is considered as the as an

important field of study because of its
applications in daily life.”
4
GEOMETRY IN NATURE

In some fruits and vegetables there are naturally occurring

geometric shapes. Shapes that indicates growth patterns. Number
sequence that betters our understanding of natural growth. Different
fruits, leaves and flowers have geometrical shapes depending upon
the area in which
they are found. For
example; Pine leaves
are thin and have
sharp tip giving it a
shape like cone, the
leaves of lotus are is
bigger and the leaves
can float easily on
water. Fruits like
oranges, lemon are
spherical in shape
where as cashew fruits have a peculiar shape. Different geometrical
shapes are seen once the fruits cut into half like in Kiwi, orange, apple
etc. Even Vegetables have different geometric shapes like carrot,
radish are conical in shape whereas beetroot, tomato, onion are
spherical in shape. Egg planet is oval in shape. The spider web is the
best example of geometry seen in nature.

5
The outer shell of the turtle also have geometric
shapes and patterns on it.Mountains took like a pyramid When a stone
is dipped into the still water of a pond the design so formed is
geometric shape.

GEOMETRY IN ASTRONOMY

6
In astronomy, geometric shapes help to understand the
location of different planet is spherical in shape. Many geometrical
principles and equipments are used in astronomy. Many important
calculations and findings made in astronomy are possible with the
help of geometry.
According to technology.com, geometry is used in
astronomy to determine the properties of stars and other objects in
space. It is developed to be a practical guide in measuring the
velocity, area, volume and length of heavenly bodies.

GEOMETRY IN SPORT

In every sports, geometry is a vital part from sports matrial

to the ground where it is played. For example;basket ball is spherical
in shapes and the placewhere it is played is square in shape.Relay race
is played in an oval shpaed racing track and the stick is cylindrcal in
shape. In carom, the board is rectangular in shape.where asthe coins in
circular in shapes. And play area for each sports is measured and made
under some geometrical theory and principles.

7
GEOMETRY IN ART AND ARCHITECTURE

Different houses and buildings are build in different

geometric shapes to give a new look as well as provide good air and
light flow inside the house. Geometrical tools like protractor, ruler,
measuring tape and many more are used in construction work
astronomy, for measurements, drawings. Different art forms are made
by joining different geometric shapes together.
There is a psychological aspect behind the use of
geometric pattern in art and how the human mind perceives each of
these shapes. Geometric shape has been used in all types of art
throughout the centuries and photography is no exception. The human
mind perceives squares and rectangles to suggest conformity. Circles
suggest completeness.

8
GEOMETRY IN LAND SURVEYING

Geometry is fully applied in land surveying. Geometry came from

two Greek words such as “geo” which means land and “metron”
means measurement. In land surveying, we are measuring the levels
and profiles of land, the area of lot/land, the bearings and azimuth of
every points in a lot, the volume of land excavation or landfill, the
distances of every points etc.

Examples:
1. For a cadastral survey in determining the area of trapezoidal lot,
you need to apply the formula for area of trapezoid. And mind
that trapezoid belongs to a plane geometry. Also triangle, circle,
octagon, square etc are plane geometry.
2. The land survey conducted to determine the volume of landfill
to be done in a certain area with irregular dimensions
(Prismoid). To determine the volume, we can use a prisamoidal
volume formula. A prisamoid belongs to solid geometry.
3. A certain survey done for a road in which readings are in
coordinates of northing and easting ((x, y) coordinates) and the
purpose of survey is to determine the length of the road.

GEOMETRY IN CARS

Geometry is present in automobiles in several ways.

Outside and inside, when designing a car, designers use geometry to
determine efficiency, power, speed, and fuel economy to create a
driving machine with the best features as possible.

Wheels and Tires

The size of the wheels on a car is very important to
performance. A taller wheel may allow a vehicle to reach a higher top
speed while a shorter tire allows the vehicle to accelerate faster. The
wider a tire is the more traction it has on the road but also causes
drag. Designers find the best dimensions and measurements to get the
best performance.

10
In the Engine
Geometry is found under the hood as well. The engine
is the most important part of performance of a vehicle and can get
very complicated. Often people assume that the more cylinders in a
car the more power it outputs. Volume does related to the
performance of a vehicle, but it is measured in compression ratio. A
car with a higher compression ratio but fewer cylinders will have a
great performance. Without getting too complicated, greater volume
is usually better, as it what i use for word problems.

Spoilers
Spoilers on cars often are placed for looks, but on
performance vehicles, spoilers are installed for speed and handlings.
On an aircraft, wings act provide lift to hold a plane in the air. On a
car, a spoiler does the opposite. It provides negative lift that holds a
vehicle to the ground. Car designers must consult their knowledge of
geometry when making a spoiler because if the angle is incorrect, the
affects will negatively affects the performance.

GEOMETRY IN AERODYNAMICS

Geometry is very important to the aerodynamics of a

vehicle. The aerodynamics affect the car’s handling, stability, safety,
and wind noise at high speed. The angles and shape of certain parts of
a car can produce positive or negative effects on the vehicle.
Aerodynamics is the way that the car moves through the air when
driving. The goal is to reduce the amount of drag so that it may move
faster and use less fuel.

11
GEOMETRY IN TRAFFIC SIGNS

Geometrical shapes in traffic signs help to convey the

signals of various messages. Signs convey information to travellers
not only by their messages and colour, but through their shape as
well. Special shapes are specifically assigned to create types of signs
so that travellers can recognize them quickly and react appropriately.

In general, the greater number of sides on a sign, the more

critical message it conveys. This is why a circular shape was adopted
for the Railroad Advance Warning Signs (i.e. infinite number of
sides), as a collision between a train and a typical vehicle will nearly
always end badly. Then the other shape octagon is used for the stop
sign, since not noticing that sign typically has unpleasant

12
consequences, and so on the line. There are of course exceptions to
this rule –a pentagonal country group marker a greater threat than a
standard square route marker, and even they have only three sides,
YIELD and NO passing zone signs are still rather important.

Standard Sign shapes and their assigned meanings;

Circles –Exclusively for railroad advance

Warning signs.

Octagon - Exclusively for STOP signs.

Cross buck -Exclusively for railroad grade

and Country route marker signs.

Diamond - Used for warning signs.

Rectangle, longer dimension vertical – Used for

Regulatory Signs.

Signs.

15
GEOMETRY IN PHOTOGRAPHY

When composing an image, the addition geometric pattern or

basic shapes such as lines circles, squares and triangles can add
structure and organization within that photograph. It can help the
photographer to convey an idea or feeling to the viewer. The overall
purpose of this is simple, to keep the views eye within the frame of
the image. The viewer may perceive only a “pleasing image” without
ever knowing or asking why.

There are basic forms of geometry in photography, true and

perceived. A true form would be the rectangular window or doorway
on house. A perceived triangle could be 3 people in an image that
when connected by an imaginary line form a triangle, which form is
used weather perceived or true depends on the opportunity presented
to the photographer at the time.

16
GEOMETRY IN GAMES

Geometry is a must known skill for children as they get

older. The geometry based games offers all parents and teachers alike
a variety of geometry maths game to help children of different ages
polish their geometry skills. Compliment classroom lesson plans with
our geometry games that offer a fun and exciting approach to a
challenging subject. Rest assured that with the added fun of the
geometry games, learning geometry can truly be an enjoyable process.
There are several different types of geometry based games are there.
The games lead to developing math side of the brain. Iso Ball, Ratio
Martian, Alien Angles, Math lines etc are the diff games in geometry.

17
GEOMETRY IN FASHION DESIGNING
Fashion designers routinely make use of geometrical
implements such as T-squares and rulers, with straight lines being a
common sight in contemporary fashion. These includes crisp, straight
edged collars and A-lined dresses that flare out from the body.
Particularly in print, checkers, bold Zigzags and grids are
common. Some designers aim for disguising of the natural figure with
such geometry, often by combining straight edged garments with grid
like patterning.
Geometrical principles underpin fashion design more
generally. For example, garments must
be balanced on the body around a central
fulcrum. This can be achieved through
the use of symmetry or, with greater
difficulty (and therefore greater expense)
by exploring asymmetrical pattern
designs.
Of course, fashion
designers also keep in mind that the way
in which the garments will fit on the
body and which parts of the body will be drawn attention to while
wearing the garments. This is accomplished with a keen knowledge of
angles and the way in which lines come together to create a garment’s
focal point.
Therefore, geometry is integral to all forms of design
and fashion designers make use of it in decisions regarding shapes,
patterns and prints. Angles play a role in determining necklines and
hems, for instance, and sophisticated geometrical patterns are very
often seen on garments.

18
METHODOLOGY

For the data’s required for this project, I collected initial

data’s from the textbooks and other resource books and also from
internet. I consulted some of my teachers to add more points and
details about geometry. I myself tried to understand the construction
of households and buildings, using geometry and traffic signals
influence in geometry. I also tried to collecting some pictures to make
clearer the importance of geometry in our daily life. Geometry is
useful in vehicles and every part is constructed in geometry or
geometrical shapes.

RESULT AND DISUSSION

From the data’s collected, we can analyse the fact that

geometry can be applied in many life situations. Geometry provides a
means of applying mathematical ideas to construction of vehicles and
virtually all objects. To be able to understand the wonder of worlds
shape and appreciate it, we need to be able to understand and have
knowledge of spatial use. Think of geniuses that created man made
wonders. They all made use of geometry to be able to construct and
make their creative thinking come to life. Without the use of the
geometry it would only have stayed ideas and dreams. Many different
scientific and technological require knowledge of geometry. The
details on real life applications of geometry help the pupil in
encouraging the concept in real life situations.

19
CONCLUSION
I found that geometry has a wide variety of
applications in real life along with development of society. It plays a
vital role in science and technology, sometimes we do not notice or
overlook. Geometry is very important to the nature, construction of
buildings and houses, in vehicles, sorts, games, astronomy etc.
Geometry is especially use in home building or improvement projects.
If you want to find the floor area of a house, we use geometry. This
information is useful for laying carpets or tiles and for telling an
estate agent how big your house is when you want to put it on the
market. If you want to reupholster furniture, you have to estimate the
amount fabric we need by calculating the surface area of the furniture.
