I) LANGUAGE (12 MARKS)

1)Put the words in parentheses in the correct tense or form (4marks).

The digital landscape has put increased pressure on

teenagers today, and we feel it. There are so many social
media channels: Face book, Twitter, Instagram, Snap
chat, Tumblr, you name it. I made a conscious
(decide)…………………. to avoid Snap chat and Instagram
because of the (society)………………… pressure I saw them
putting on my 14-year-old little sister. If my mum turned
off the WiFi at 11pm, my sister would beg me to turn my
1
phone into a hotspot . She always needed to load her Snap chat stories one more time, or to
reply to a message that had come in two minutes ago because she (not/ want)…………………
her friend to feel ignored. If I refused, saying she could respond in the morning, I’d get the
“You’re ruining my social life” speech. Even as a teenager as well, I sometimes find this craze
a little baffling.
A new study has found that teenagers who engage with social media during the night could
be (damage)……………………… their sleep and increasing their risk of anxiety and
(depressed)........................ Teenagers spoke about the pressure they felt to make
(they)..............................available 24/7 and the resulting anxiety if they did not respond
immediately to texts or posts. Teens are so (emotional)........................ invested in social
media that a fifth of secondary school pupils will wake up at night and log on just to make
sure they don’t miss out. Perhaps the (bad)..................... thing about this is that teenagers
need more sleep than adults do, so night-time social media use could be detrimental to their
health. A lack of sleep can make teenagers tired, irritable, and depressed.
2)Circle the correct alternative (4marks)

Shopping.com
Since the development of the internet many things that were hard
to get or to do, like information or communication with (distance

Among the many advantages that the Internet gives us is online

(shopping /shops /shop ), an activity that many have
become(addiction / addicted /addict ) to. Shopping is a necessity
for all of us, some of us really enjoy it, but others consider it an

obligatory chore. Online shopping is the ( best /good /better) for all. The main
advantage of online shopping is that it allows people to examine many products without
leaving their house, to compare the prices of as many shops as they want, and also to order
as many items as they can afford without (have / had /having) to worry (on /about /at) how
they will transport them , because the online shopping websites also carry the things to the
buyer’s home. Besides, the internet is open 24 hours a day, so you don’t have to hurry or
worry where to park your car . You also avoid contact with strange people and avoid the
uncomfortable (feel /felt /feeling) when you drag your kids for shopping.
