Profile of Group
The class consists of ten students in all, divided equally between the sexes. There is a
good mix of nationalities ranging from four Saudis to three Japanese to two Chinese to
one Kuwaiti. They are all in their twenties. All students except the Japanese intend to
further their studies at postgraduate level and are looking to obtain the pre-requisite
IELTS scores needed to help them to do this. The Japanese students are
undergraduates and, in the case of two of them, plan to return to Japan to complete
their studies at the end of this term. The other student plans to stay on for the whole
year. The Arab and Chinese students also plan to stay on for the rest of the academic
year, except the Kuwait student who has signed on for just 11 weeks. With regard to
disciplines, there is a mix of science and humanities students, a number of whom intend
to pursue business-, finance- or law-related degrees, while the scientists are interested
in physics and chemistry. Their writing scores at the beginning of the course ranged
from 4 to 5.5, which increased to 5 to 6 at mid-term. The majority of the students
themselves (5 out of 8) recognised their own shortcomings in this skill when they rated
themselves weak in academic writing in the needs analysis. Indeed, very few classed
themselves as ‘good’ in any skills or ability (only 2 out of 8) while the majority rated
themselves as ‘average’ overall. In terms of weaknesses, apart from academic writing,
speaking and pronunciation (4 out of 8 respectively) seemed to be the main problem
