CONVERSION TABLES − GENERAL−06
Task 70−99−00−990−006:
1. Hardness Number Conversions: Heat Treated Or Hot Worked Carbon
And Low Alloy Soft Steels Rockwell B105 And Lower
A. General
(1) The conversion table for steel hardness numbers is
recommended for use in converting the results of one form of hardness test to another, for heat treated or hot worked carbon and low alloy structural steels only. See Figure 001 (Sheet 1), thru (Sheet 5). This conversion table is not applicable to severely cold worked steels, or to stainless steels, cast irons, or non−ferrous metals and alloys.
(2) Figure 001 (Sheet 1), thru (Sheet 5) gives the
approximate relationships of Rockwell, Brinell, Scleroscope, and Vickers hardness values. The listed conversion values are average, but individual tests may vary from the average.
(3) The use of the Rockwell C test below 20 and the use of the Rockwell B test above 100 are not recommended.
(4) All necessary precautions in taking hardness tests
should be observed before any conversions are made.
