“Family and Community Friendly” Walkthrough Checklist

Is your school “Family and Community Friendly”?


Research shows that when schools, parents and communities work together to support the education of a child, not only does the student perform
better in school, but all throughout life! The best way to nurture a strong relationship between school and family is to create a friendly and
welcoming school environment for the families and communities of the students. This is the primary method of improving parental and community
involvement!

What is the purpose of this Walkthrough Checklist?


This checklist was adapted from The North Carolina Parent Information and Resource Center (NC PIRC) Family Friendly Walkthrough as a tool to
help schools assess their “Family Friendly” practices. Together, schools, parents and the community can look at strategies that will help make the
school more inviting to families and the community.

Suggested Walkthrough Guidelines:


• Please adhere to a 5 to 10 minute time frame per classroom.
• Please refrain from interacting with the teacher during the class. The back of this form has a place to request a parent-teacher conference.
• Please refrain from conversations with anyone while in the classroom as they could cause an interruption to the learning environment.
• Your honest feedback and positive suggestions for improvement are welcomed.
