1. Describe the event and where/when it is taking place.

This year, University of Ottawa’s CSCE chapter will be hosting the Small Bridge
Competition as a qualifier for the Concordia Troitsky competition. The uOttawa
CSCE student chapter is a sub-association of the ESS and is also a student chapter
of the larger Canadian Society for Civil Engineers organization. It is a professional
organization that serves civil engineers in Canada, and is similar to other
organizations such as IEEE, ASCE, and AMSE. The University of Ottawa chapter
provides undergraduate and graduate students with a discounted membership rate
and opportunities throughout the year to engage with fellow engineers through
conferences and other events.

The event will be held in CBY like previous years in early November, however the
room will be decided depending on the level of interest.

2. How many University of Ottawa Engineering students are attending this

event?

The Small Bridge Competition is one of uOttawa CSCE’s most popular events,
achieving 5-6 teams of 5 in previous years.

3. How will this event benefit the students attending?

The competition tackles the depth of knowledge on trusses that our civil engineering
students have. They have an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge and
gain the experience of building a real life model of their ideas.

4. How will this event benefit the organizers?

As this is one of our most successful events during the Fall semester, it gives us
exposure within the school community and also intrigues students to come to our
other events.

5. How does the event promote engineering at the University of Ottawa?

The request benefits Engineering students at the University of Ottawa by providing

an opportunity for students to develop theoretical,
communicative and management skills necessary for a successful career
in engineering by participating in the competition. The event will also be open for
students at the University of Ottawa to watch and cheer on their fellow colleagues.
6. How will the event be promoted/marketed to the student body?

The event will be promoted in several steps. In mid-October, an initial email will be
sent out with the competition date, team registration date, and contact information.
A second email will follow the first towards the closing of the registration
period. Emails will also be sent out to the Civil Engineering Department to invite the
professors to come to the event. A third and final email will be sent out a week
before the competition inviting any students who want to watch the competition. A
Facebook event will be created through the uOttawa CSCE Facebook page to
further promote the event and will also be posted on the ESS Facebook group and
the uOttawa CSCE website as well to help reach out to all engineering students.

Also, the event will be spread by word of mouth. The exec and year reps will perform
class presentations in mid- October to invite their colleagues.
