stored in the fly wheel when its speed increases from 315 rpm to 340 rpm.
2. Explain in what way the gyroscopic couple effects the motion of an aircraft while taking
left turn. Assume propeller is rotating clockwise when it is viewed from rear end.
3. What is meant by piston effort and crank effort?
4. What is the pole of a coupler link of a four link mechanism?
5. What is a dynamometer?
6. What are the advantages of double shoe brake over single shoe brake?
7. Discuss how a single revolving mass is balanced by two masses revolving in different

8. Discuss the effect of inertia of the shaft in longitudinal and transverse vibrations.
9. Why is balancing of rotating parts necessary for high speed engines ?
10. Explain clearly the terms ‘static balancing’ and ‘dynamic balancing’. State the necessary
conditions to achieve them.
.PART – B
Answer ALL questions 3x10= 30M
1. The rotor of a marine turbine has a mass of 2.2 tons and rotates at 1800 rpm clockwise
when viewed from stern (aft). The radius of gyration of the rotor is 320 mm. Determine
the gyroscopic couple and its effect when the
i. Ship turns right at a radius of 250 m with a speed of 25 kmph.
ii. Ship pitches with the bow rising at an angular velocity of 0.8 rad/s.
iii. Ship rolls at an angular velocity of 0.1 rad/s.

2. The areas above and below the mean torque line for an I.C. engine are – 25, + 200, - 100,
+ 150, - 300, + 150 and – 75 mm2 taken in order. The scale for the turning moment
diagram is 1 mm on vertical scale = 10 Nm and 1 mm on horizontal scale = 1.50. The
mass of the rotating parts are 45 kg with a radius of gyration of 150 mm. If the engine
speed is 1500 rpm, Find the co efficient of fluctuation of speed.
3. The effective steam pressure on the piston of a vertical steam engine is 200000 N/m2
when the crank is 400 from the top dead center on the down stroke. The crank and
connecting rod lengths are 300 mm and 1200 mm respectively. The diameter of cylinder
is 800 mm. If the engine speed is 300 rpm and mass of the reciprocating parts is 250 kg,
determine piston effort, thrust on the connecting rod, thrust on the cylinder walls, crank
effort and thrust on the bearings.
(OR)
4. Design a four link mechanism to coordinate three position of the input and output links
given by
θ12 = 1200 θ13 = 1700 φ12=700 φ13=1000
5. A single block brake, as shown in Fig., has the drum diameter 250 mm. The angle of
contact is 90° and the coefficient of friction between the drum and the lining is 0.35. If
the operating force of 650 N is applied at the end of the lever, determine the torque that
may be transmitted by the block brake.

6. Explain a) Prony brake dynamometer and b) Rope brake dynamometer, with neat sketch.
7. Three masses 8kg, 12kg, and 15kg attached at radial distances of 80mm,100mm,and
60mm respectively to a disc on a shaft are in complete balance. Determine the angular
position of the masses 12kg and 15kg relative to 8kg mass.
(OR)
8. (a) What are the differences between reverse and direct crank methods of balancing of
reciprocating engines.
(b) A single cylinder horizontal engine runs at 120 r.p.m. The length of stroke is 400 mm.
The mass of the revolving parts assumed concentrated at the crank pin is 100kg and mass
of the reciprocating parts is 150kg.Determine the magnitude of the balancing mass
required to be placed opposite to the crank at a radius of 150mm which is equivalent to
all the revolving and 2/3rd of the reciprocating mass. If the crank turns 300 from the
inner dead centre, find the magnitude of the unbalanced force due to the balancing mass
9. The lengths and diameters of a stepped shaft from end A to end B are: (300,100),
(160,150),(125,120)and(400,90)mm. The rotor masses and radius gyrations at A and B
are: (300kg,0.75m)and (500kg,0.9m). The shear modulus of the shaft material is
84GPa.Determine the frequency of the torsion system. It is desired to have the node at
mid section of the shaft by changing the diameter of the section having a 90mm diameter,
what will be the new diameter.

b) A load of 50 Kg is suspended from a spring of stiffness 5 KN/m and its damped by a
damper of magnitude 75N at 1 m/sec. If the load is displaced from the equilibrium
