Common Phrasal Verbs

List 2: inseparable transitive verbs

Verbs that require an object and cannot be separated by the object

* These can also be intransitive (List 1)

be up for = feel like doing, be willing to do

be up to = be busy doing

bump into = run into = meet (someone) by chance

*carry on with = continue with

catch up on = do something you haven’t been able to do recently

come across = find by chance

come down with = catch (illness)

come up with = find or produce (idea, solution, suggestion)

crack down on = get strict with

crack on with = get (it) done quickly

cut back on = cut down on = reduce the intake of

deal with = handle, do something about (= see to)

end up with = have as the final result

fall in with = meet and join (a group)

find out about = discover (a fact) about

get into = develop (habit)

hear of = become aware of the existence of someone or something

lead to = bring about = cause

look after = take care of

look for = search for


look forward to = be excited about (future event)
look into = investigate

make up for = compensate for

put up with = tolerate

run into = bump into = meet (someone) by chance

run through = examine quickly

run out of = exhaust (supply)

see to = do something about

sign up for = enrol (course, event)

*split up with = end a relationship with someone

take to = become fond of

think of = consider
