Neutralisation
• Fill in the gaps in the paragraph below

Acids and alkalis are chemical o__ p __ s __ __ __ __. When

an acid reacts with an alkali a n__ __ t __ __ __ solution

is made. This process is called n__ u t __ __ __ i __ __

t__ __ n.

A salt and w __ __ __ __ get made when this happens.

• Try to complete the word equation for neutralisation.

________ + alkali → ________ + water

Making Salt
• For each stage of the method stick in the correct picture from your sheet.

Method
1. A few drops of acid were placed into a petri dish.

2. The same amount of alkali was added using a dropper.

3. The acid and the alkali were mixed together.

4. Next the petri dish was heated over a very gentle flame.
Neutralistion Name

5. After a few minutes crystals of salt appeared in the petri

dish.

Questions
What was the name of the laboratory acid used?

What was the name of the laboratory alkali used?

What was the name of the reaction that happened in this

experiment?

Using universal indicator to find out about neutralisation

You can see neutralisation happening if you add Universal
Indicator to the acid and the alkali before you mix them
together.
Neutralistion Name

Try this!
Collect the following equipment: 3 glass beakers
1 stirring rod
Universal Indicator solution
pH colour chart
Safety goggles
Step 1
When you are ready ask your teacher to pour in 50 cm3 of alkali into one
beaker. Add a few drops of Universal Indicator solution. Colour the
beaker below and record the pH.
pH=
This is _______

Step 2
Into one of the other beakers ask your teacher to pour in 50 cm3 of acid.
Add a few drops of Universal Indicator solution. Colour the beaker below
and record the pH.

pH=
This is ______

Step 3
• You are now going to mix your acid and alkali. In the clean beaker you
have left.
• CAREFULLY pour them into the clean beaker you have left.
• Mix them gently using the stirring rod. Colour the beaker below and
record the pH of the solution.

pH=
This is ______

The stomach acid problem

Everybody’s stomach contains acid. It is the same one that you

have used today.
• What is the acid in your stomach called?

_____________________________________________

Sometimes your stomach produces too much acid. It rises up

and hurts the oesophagus that leads from the stomach to the
mouth and causes ‘heartburn’.
• What type of substance should people take to get rid of

‘heartburn’ caused by too much acid?

_____________________________________________

• Why should a weak alkali be used to cure ‘heartburn’? (Look

at page 98 to help you)

_____________________________________________

People often use a substance called Milk of Magnesia, which

has a pH of 9 to cure ‘heartburn’. It helps to neutralise the
excess acid.
