Plastic Mold & Hot-Working Tool Steel W.1.2714
Manufacturing Process
The steel is produced from selected materials, by BEAF melting, VAD or LF/VD refining
& degassing and pouring under vacuum (double-degassing practice under .5Torr) in
multi-side ingots.
Precision forging is performed on 120MN hydraulic press at a minimum forging ratio
of 4:1 (upsetting is regularly employed) and is followed by conditioning heat treatment
(at least Annealing to Max.250 BHN).
Quality heat treatment is performed with gas-fired car-bottom furnaces and quenching
tanks. Parameters are carefully selected to get as much as possible homogenous
microstructure and properties thru the entire cross section of the forging:
- Austenitizing: 840 - 870ºC
- Quenching: Oil or Air, depending on product shape and size
- Tempering: 540 - 660ºC, depending on the required hardness level. When
required, double tempering can be used.
Usually, the forgings (rectangular or round) are delivered in as forged condition, but
under request, partially or fully surfaces machining can be performed as well.
Inspection
Regular base, chemistry, dimensions / geometry, hardness (our procedure) and
soundness (visual and ultrasonic tests) are checked.

[mm]
Rectangles ≤ 20.0 ≤ 12.0
Length of the forging is of 1500 - 5000mm for both kinds of shapes. However, forging weight (in connection with
dimensions) needs to cover steel quantity made in one heat (≥38Ton as total rough-forged weight of products)
Squareness Flatness
Machinability 1)
Weldability
Machinability is good. Mean CE ≈ 1.110 Welding is difficult, but
possible. Welding during
operation of the mold
requires extreme care and
strict supervision.
