CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Interface between differently aged concrete is the weakest link for composite behavior and

is a source of premature failure due to property mismatch between the new overlay concrete and

existing concrete. Old and new concrete have different chemical analogies. Chemical reactions or

Hydration in old precast concrete has processed while it is yet to process in the new overlay. To

ensure that the structural members do not deteriorate and adversely affect the structural members’

strength parameters, satisfactory interfacial bond strength is pivotal.

Essential to the measurement of the bond strength at the interfacial layer is the

understanding of bonding mechanism and investigation of affecting parameters to its properties.

Some parameters that affect the bond are water-cementitious ratio, the presence of moisture at the

existing concrete substrate, and surface texture and preparation.

To evaluate the bond strength, Slant Shear test can be conducted. Slant shear test is one of

the most widespread bond tests and is said to be a reliable and consistent method since it stimulates

a stress state close to the actual use and failure mode of concrete. The interface is subjected to a

stress state of compression combined with shear.

In this study, the researchers will evaluate the interfacial bond strength considering the

surface preparation and joint angle. The slant shear test method utilizes a 75mm diameter by

150mm depth of Portland cement mortar cylinder joined at 30˚ to the vertical. The researchers then

thought if there will be differences in the interfacial bond strength with the change in the joint
