many years, he invites the 17 th -century painting from
art dealer Éric Coatalem to trouble his univers made

met with this man of passion to listen to him talk
mostly about corrida and less about sculpture. If you
try, you may even meet him at the Plaza de Torros

If that does not sound appealing, you can always

or take time to follow his tips and read La sculpture

Patrice Bellanger ©Oleg Covian

How does one become an expert in the field of 17 th, 18th and
19th century sculpture?
I am a son and grandson of antique dealers that offered
exceptional objects. My parents always bought what they liked
and in the majority of cases sold the objects to other art dealers.
Their activity was in my opinion too subjective and it bothered me
a little. But just because of vanity I wanted to sell artworks. I was a
second-hand goods and antiques dealer and sculpture was a love
at first sight.

Doesn’t this precise period limit you?

Well, of course I bought and sold modern sculpture, Ruhlmann,
Jean Michel Frank, Dunand as well, but I stopped because I had
the impression of constantly chasing names and the unceasing
price increase did not suit me either. That made me unpolite and I
quit.

And what about contemporary art?

You would have to come to my place! Generally I stopped on Miró.

More recent art does not appeal to you?

No, it is a question of understanding. If we do not understand, we
cannot like. We are not able to form an opinion without knowing
the elements that make an artwork a good one. I believe more in
knowledge than emotions. Emotions are subjective and I do not
like them. Passion should be something anchored in human
nature. But it’s not true! Emotions are evoked by conscious or
unconscious culture. If we take for instance Van Gogh, he never
sold a painting in his life because people did not understand him,
and if the Japanese appreciate Van Gogh it is only because they
find in his works a kind of sensibility which is close to theirs.

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK…
Imminent migration of Child with a Dove
Picasso’s Child with a Dove will soon leave Great Britain to probably join Qatar and the new setting of the Museum of
Islamic Art, designed by Pei and Wilmotte or the Mathaf, dedicated to modern and contemporary art.
Though it has been referenced by the Treasury since 1974, the painting marking the beginning of the blue period of
the artist belongs to the private collection of aristocrats in Wales, the Aberconway family, who announced their
intention to separate themselves from the artwork. As it was exhibited at the Courtauld Gallery for a long time,
Bloomberg’s website announced on 15 April 2013 that the painting was sold for £50m, which is about €59m, during a
private sale organised by Christie’s International (CHRS) and will leave its adoptive homeland for a new cultural el
dorado. About a year ago, the State launched a subscription campaign so that the patronage could save the artwork
from exportation. But the delay was too short and, due to the economic context, the crowdfunding did not succeed in
gathering the substantial amount needed. If Qatar is indeed the acquirer of the artwork, Picasso’s canvas should
complete the masterpieces already bought by the emirate, including Les joueurs de Cartes by Cézanne, purchased for
$250m in February 2012, and Rockfeller by Rothko, purchased in 2007 for $72.8m.
Until 26 May, Child with a Dove will continue to be exhibited at the Courtauld Gallery. The prohibition of the exhibition
decided by the Arts Council, a public establishment for cultural financing, will end in June.

Daniel Reich commits suicide
The Reich family has just announced the death of New York gallery owner Daniel Reich. He committed suicide on 25
December 2012 at the age of 39.
This tragedy occurred a little more than a year after the closing down of his New York gallery, which he wished to reopen.
The young dealer had established himself with this gallery, which was named after him. Throughout the course of the years,
it had grown and gained importance, by representing artists such as Christian Holstad, Paul P., the Scott brothers and Tyson
Reeder among others.
The gallery owner said last year to The New York Observer that “It resets you, it returns you to that initial energy, the fire that
you had, way back then, when you knew that you wanted to do this.”

INTERVIEW WITH SONIA PASTOR
FROM SEM-ART

The SEM-Art gallery, created in 2010, is the youngest modern

and contemporary art gallery in Monaco. It has undertaken a
work of production, encouragement and enhancement of
contemporary creation by accompanying plastic art
collectives and going after young talent. Among other things,
the gallery also defends the work of the FrenchFries collective
that is presenting its project “Shipping Paradise” at the Cité
Internationale des Arts, starting from 18 April 2013. Art Media
Agency wished to learn more on the gallery’s form of support
of young artists and on the gallery’s strategy.

Can you please present the FrenchFries collective?

These young artists do not only have a good sense of humour, but
they also have a profound and clear idea about society and its
evolution. We met them at the Villa Arson de Nice, a great place
for developing talents, with which we are happy to collaborate.
The founder of the gallery, Safia El-Malqui, offers to help them
personally with their production matters since she is herself a
collector and that it is her passion to go out and look for young
promising plastic artists.

Well, how did you meet them?

In 2010, we started working with Korean artist Eun Young Lee, who

these influences visually. Music is also a way of bringing

Successful opening of the Salon DDessin
In the framework of the week of drawing in Paris, the Salon
DDessin was inaugurated with an awaited opening reception
held on 11 April 2013. Art Media Agency was there and shares
the first impressions.
The Atelier Richelieu, an ancient printing house of a 700-sqm
surface was crowded. From 6pm to 10pm, the space was full and
there was always a queue in front of the entrance. Over twenty
French and international galleries specialised in drawing and
works on paper were visited by a great amount of people, which
confims current interest in this medium.
In spite of different events devoted to drawing held this week in
Paris, organisers and visitors agreed on the importance of the
DDessin. The works presented by the galleries, holding prices
between €100 and €8,000, met with great interest by the public.
Iranian artist Nima Zaare-Nahandi won the DDessin Prize.
