lo, improved memor and mucle tone while eliminating irritale owl, gatric reflux and
attention deficit. The proce folk tart out tagging equipment a follow:
Pump are impl tagged P-1, P-2, P-3 (make ene right?)
Agitator are tagged AG-1, AG-2, AG-3, etc. Dude - thi i o imple!
And of coure tank and veel are tagged TK-1, TK-2, TK-3 (or V-1, V-2, V-3). Could do
thi in m leep...
And o on...Life i good. Later on, though le common equipment tart getting added, and
thi tart to tre the "intuitive" nature of the tem. For example, a centrifuge i initiall
tagged C-1 ut now the need to add a conveor ut C i taken o the decide to call the
conveor CO-1. Now the think, well, we will jut revie the centrifuge tag to C-1. Crii
avoided...ut wait, later the need to add a chemical feed package and want to tag that CF-1.
OK, that' cool ut then a unch of cro flow filter module i added the decide to "teal"
the CF lael for thoe and change the chemical feed to C, no wait...can't do that, C i taken
the centrifuge. o the ite the proverial ullet and call the chemical feed kid C-1
where i "intuitive" for uppl. Right? Tr again quiz kid. Nood i going to ee that a
intuitive. And then one da, it hit GitRDun' proce engineer that their initiall conceived
o-called intuitive tagging tem i a heap of roken confuion and nood know their C'
from their CO'. Cue the Jackon 5 ong A C, imple a 1 2 3!
A etter Tag Numering tem
To avert the prolem inherent in the aove example, man proce indutrie utilize a
numeric-onl tem for tagging equipment. Thi help implif the logical categorization of
equipment during the proce deign phae. Moreover, a tructured tag tem i more
intuitive for the development of deign documentation, operating procedure and training,
and general documentation upkeep/maintenance. With that in mind (and conidering the
point preented earlier in thi Part), the following method i ut one example of how to tag
proce equipment uing an extenile tem.
Area Numer, AN Mot izale proce plant are compried of multiple area. An area i a
phical, geographical, or logical grouping determined the ite. It ma contain proce
cell, unit, equipment module, and control module (more detail can e found at ia.org).
To facilitate a hierarchical organization of equipment, equipment tag hould then

incorporate area deignation.
A mall or imple project ma have onl one area. Converel, larger more complex project
ma have multiple area. The aignment of area i at the dicretion of the proce engineer
and can e ujective. The onl general rule that I like to emplo i that common equipment
that erve multiple area, e.g., utilit and infratructure tem e placed into a "Common
Reource" area rather than e made a part of an other proce area. Once area have een
deignated for a particular project tpe, engineer hould trive to maintain common area
deignation on future, imilar project. For example, the area hown in the figure aove
ma e defined on the lead heet for a fictitiou project.
quipment Tpe, T
quipment can e identified aed on it tpe uing a numeric tem uch a the imple one
hown elow. In cae where equipment ha multiple function, uer dicretion i advied in
electing the mot uitale tpe code.
equence Numer, Q
Thi i the conecutive numering of like equipment in a particular area. The equence
egin with 01. All equipment i to a have it own equence numer. The ue of alphaetic or
other tag uffixe i to e avoided.

xample quipment Tag
Uing the tem outlined aove, a four-digit tem emerge that ma not e intantl
recognizale in term of what the pecific equipment i (or where), ut it will eventuall
ecome ver familiar to thoe who are intimate with the plant. A few example uing the
area numer defined aove are provided elow:
1101 - The firt pump in the tank farm area.
1701 - The firt tank in the tank farm area.
1405 - The fifth mixer in the tank farm area.
2901 - A vendor package in the Train 1 area.
The equipment tag numer hould e prominentl diplaed near the mol ued for the
equipment. For example, the tag numer for a centrifuge might appear a follow on a P&ID.
Latl, all major equipment hould e named and provided general pecification in a lael
placed along the drawing order. A couple example for a pump and tank follow.

It i up to our compan to decide on the final formatting, location (ome companie like to
put certain equipment lael near the top of the order), and which particular pecification
hould e included along with each major equipment lael. The tem preented here i
fairl imple and roadl applicale. Irrepective of thee detail, I highl recommend that
ever piece of major equipment receive a lael with a imilar level of detail.
Intrument Loop Numer
A enefit of uing four digit equipment numering tem uch a the one preented aove
i that the tag lend themelve toward application in defining aociated intrument loop.
Thi make grouping equipment and aociated intrumentation device more logical. Think
ack to our friend at GitRDun Proce, Inc. Their tagging tem conited of tag like P-1,
AG-1, C-2, etc. Thee tag are not amenale for ue in defining intrument loop. However, a
four digit tem doe neatl tuck into intrument ule and when ou think aout it,
mot intrument and device erve or are primaril aociated with a piece of equipment.
And even when that i not the cae, the can readil orrow from the equipment tpe code
"9" in cae where, for intance, a preure gauge on an air header erving the entire area
mut e defined. Conidering the aove point, the following intrument and device tagging
tem i ut one effective wa to tag intrument and device:

Where;
PX - device tpe prefix (a per IA 5.1)
Q - the aociated equipment tag (a defined aove)
X - duplicate or redundant device uffix (ee detail elow)
Duplicate uffix, X Rule
A uffix i provided to accommodate intance were man device of the ame tpe are
aociated with a given piece of equipment. For example, a veel ma have man line
connected to it, each having it own actuated valve. To reolve thee intance o that each
device ha it own unique loop numer, there are two uffix tag method that can e
emploed,
1. If a piece of equipment ha redundant device aociated with it, an alphaetic uffix ma
e appended to the loop numer, e.g., FV1101A, FV1101, FV1101C, etc. (Note: Redundant
mean erving the ame purpoe a another device in a ackup fahion.)
2. If a piece of equipment ha multiple item of the ame tpe, each of which with different
function (not redundant) then a numeric tem hould e emploed, e.g., FV1101-1,
FV1101-2, etc.
xample Loop Tag
aed on the aove dicuion, ome example loop tag are provided elow. If needed, the
reader can viit a more though dicuion in Part 3 regarding intrument areviation.
(Note: In the example provided, I ue the example Area Numer preented a example

aove.)
PI1101 - A preure indicator on the dicharge of the firt pump in the tank farm area.
LT1701 - A level tranmitter on the firt tank in the tank farm area.
IT1405 - A current tranmitter (for the motor) on the fifth agitator in the tank farm area.
A1701A - One of at leat two redundant analzer on the firt tank in the tank farm.
Hence, one would expect to ee A1701, A1701C... a indicated.
XV1701-1 - An actuated valve on the firt tank in the tank farm area. The uffix -1 implie
there are other valve aociated with tank 1701 ut in an alternate ervice (i.e., not
redundant). For example, XV1701-1 ma e on the inlet to the tank, while XV1701-2 ma
e on the outlet.
Line Numer
imilar to equipment and intrumentation, ever pipe on a P&ID require a unique tag
numer o that it can e uniquel identified during deign, or referenced in operating
procedure. ince mot line are alo affiliated with a major piece of equipment to which
the connect, I like to emplo a numering tem imilar to that ued for intrument loop
where the equipment tag i integrated into the line tag in the following manner (Note:
D002 provide an alternate method that emplo drawing numer intead of equipment
numer ut I generall prefer the method given elow.)
X"--VC--T:Q--L
Where;
X" - the nominal ize of the pipe
VC - the ervice code for the material that normall flow in the line (ee example
elow for lit)
T:VC - a unique line tag that include two part, the equipment tag from which the
line originate followed a unique equential numer
L -line pecification for the pipe, including cla and material tpe, valve etc.
ervice Code, VC
ervice code are areviation for the fluid the line primaril handle.

ince ome line can erve man different proce fluid, the fluid ued to pecif the
material for the line hould go here. The lit hould e availale on a lead heet in a manner
imilar to that provided in the example aove.
Line pecification, L
Line pecification cover all the detail related to the piping tem ued to handle the fluid
for the line. Thi hould include all detail regarding material of contruction, valve and
trim, gaket, fitting, T/P limit, and much more. Thi i eond the cope of thi erie ut
i uch a critical component of plant deign that I might expand on thi in a future pot.
Hand Valve
Hand valve require a conitent and clear tagging tem for reference in operating
procedure. There are a numer of technique that can e ued, ut one that I generall
prefer i a follow.

In the example provided at left, one can dicern valve ize, pec and tag numer. Thi might
e more information than ou want to include on ome P&ID. In cae where ou jut want
to how the valve tag and allow the pec and ize to e derived implicitl from the line tag,
the following method i one option:
"V" - D# - Q
Where;
HV or V - A literal and required part of all hand valve tag
D# - lat two digit of P&ID drawing numer
Q - equence Numer (01 to 99)
V0001 - The firt hand valve on P&ID D100
V1205 - The fifth hand valve on P&ID D102

Wrap-Up
Further to the content in thi part, D002 include a few more example of common tag and
code applied in P&ID, uch a inulation, interconnecting arrow, etc. Thee are important
part ut are prett elf-evident. Aide from that, mot companie have ver pecific wa
and mean on thee item o I won't cover them in depth here. Well, I tarted thi out
aing it wa going to e fun and imple and I hope ou leave thi erie feeling like I made
ome olid point that will e of value to ou going forward. In a follow-up to thi erie, I
will put together a complementar video where I take a few tpical P&ID (like the one I've
attached here) and dicu all of thee apect in what I hope to e a much more engaging
manner. You will then e ale to get a much etter feel for eeing and hearing thi
information. Now venture forth with our new knowledge and appl it for good. ta afe
and have fun.
