X) 7-SEGMENT DISPLAY AND ITS DECODER :-

BCD to 7 Segment Decoder

The Outputs of this normal decoder are used to drive the 7-segment LED

display.

Such a 7-segment LED display device is shown in figure.

f b

e c
d
In the figure, various arrangements of the display corresponding to the

relevant BCD code are shown. Here, the segments, which remain ON, are shown

and the segments which remain off are written below each representation of the

relevant decimal number given by the ON segments corresponding to the BCD

Code.

The 7-segment displays are available in two types :-

(a) Common Anode 7-segment display

(b) Common Cathode 7-segment display

All the anodes are connected together in a common anode type of 7-segment

display and all the cathodes are connected together in the common cathode type

7-segment display. The common anode type of 7-segment display is used by

connecting a current limiting resistance across each of the seven cathodes of the

LEDs and the ground. In case of the common cathod 7-segment display the
current limiting resistance is connected accross each anode of the LEDs and the

+Vcc.

Show the common anode type and the common cathode type of 7-segment

display. Let us now attempt to design a decoder circuit to drive the 7-segment

display device.

IC7447

We have discussed the use of Ics 7446 and 7448 in driving the 7-segment

displays. Now let us study another IC7447 which is used to drive these displays

Example : To drive a 7-segment display by7 using the IC 7447.

Solution:

As we can see from the circuit shown in figure, the seven segments from a

to g of the display have been connected to the outputs of the IC 7447. The

internal circuit of this IC makes the corresponding outputs go high when a

particular BCD code given at the inputs of the IC is 1001 then the outputs
connected to the segment e will remain low. Thus, a=1, b=1, c=1, d=1, e=0, f=1

and g=1. As a result the decimal number 9 is displayed.
