Optical Fiber Communication Scientech 2502

Experiment
Objective: V-I Characteristics of Laser Diode
The aim of this experiment is to plot the V-Icharacteristic of Laser Diode.
Equipments Required:
● Scientech 2502A Training platform with Power Supply cord
● Optical Fiber cable
● Oscilloscope with necessary connecting probe
Connection Diagram:

Theory :
LED’s and LASER diodes are the commonly used sources in optical communication
systems, whether the system transmits digital or analog signal. It is therefore, often
necessary to use linear electrical to optical converter to allow its use in intensity
modulation & high quality analog transmission systems. LED's have a linear optical
output with relation to the forward current over a certain region of operation.

Procedure:
● Connect Power Supply to the board.
● Ensure that all switched faults are in OFF condition.
● Put emitter 1 block in Digital Mode
● Make connections as given above.
 Connect the bias 1 preset on comparator to the emitter 1 input.
 Adjust the bias 1 preset to its minimum setting fully counter clockwise.
Now look down the emitter 1 Laser light Socket and slowly increase the
level of the bias 1 preset until in generates the light from Laser source is
just visible.
● Connect the DMM between Input of Emitter 1 and ground to measure input
voltage Vin.
● Connect DMM between Test point 6 and ground to measure the forward voltage
(Vf)
● To find out the forward current If, use the following formula. Here the value of
resistance 100 Ohms. The forward current is given by dividing the readings by
100 Ohms. This If is known as threshold current.
Vf
If = ------------------- A
100
● Vary the bias 1 preset so as to vary the forward voltage (1V, 2V, 3V …) and note
the corresponding If (forward current).
● Record these values of Vin and If & plot the characteristic between these two.

Questions:
● What are the characteristics of fiber optics link?
● What is the function of transmitter?
● How light signals are converted back to the electrical signals?

Objective:
Characteristics of Photo Detector (E - O converter)
The aim of this experiment is to plot the characteristic of Photo Detector.
Equipments Required:
● Scientech 2502A Training platform with Power Supply cord
● Optical Fiber cable
● Oscilloscope with necessary connecting probe

● Measure the voltage drop across the 75E resistors by connecting DMM between
TP of output of Photo Transistor and Ground. The detector current is given by
dividing the readings by 75E.

the corresponding Id (detector current).
● Record these values of Vin and Id & plot the characteristic between these two.
