goes about doing what they do is very worthy subject matter. They Upon walking inside the sizable loft/factory space where the 3 Di sails

that boasts unprecedented rigidity that yields

that Andersson said they actually had a bit of
worry about.

“We were a little concerned we were going

to put ourselves out of business,” he said
half joking.

The 3 Di sail employs a process that does

away with mylar backing therefore the dreaded
delamination issue, that destroys deluxe sails, is
also gone.

But it all begins with designers using advanced

software that analyze all of a given boat’s
characteristics, combined with what the sail
being asked to do, ultimately producing an
extremely exact road map for the sail build.
These designs are precise down to the width
of the last thinly sliced fabric filament, which
is what the sails are made of. Depending on
the quality and overall purpose, the hair-like
filaments are made of carbon, aramid and
Dyneema fibers. For more high-end racing
sails the count of carbon is higher, for cruising

moves through the assembly line-ish process.
The filaments are meticulously arranged
and formed so the aforementioned machine
can create the panels. From there it’s onto
a gigantic male mold in another building where
the material essentially gets baked in the exact
form it would have if it would under full sail.
Under the molds are dozens of pneumatically

very particular shape.

There’s a lot more detail involved in this process

but safe to say hardly anything is left to chance.
The only element of old-school sailmaking to be
seen is in the finish work. Once the sail comes
from the mold, real people sew on hardware and
other elements with actual sewing machines,
which is somehow reassuring.

So the next time you’re out and about and see

a big black sail with the recognizable North
logo, understand that thing is the product of an
extremely thought-out and advanced process.
Somewhere in the Wild West every millimeter
of that sail has been considered to produce what
you are looking at here, sailing along on the
Santa Monica Bay. It’s a brave new world…
