A reed denotes a plant with a jointed hollow stalk, growing in wet grounds. Then it refers
to the stalk as cut for use - as a measuring-stick, as in this place; or a mock scepter. Here
it means merely a stick that could be used for measuring. (1 reed = 9 ft or 6 cubits)
Like unto a measuring rod, the reed was put into his right hand (Matthew 27:25-29) in
respect to size, and was therefore convenient for handling measurement. The word "rod"
also is used to denote a measuring-pole. Ezekiel 40:5
A cubit is the measurement from the elbow to the tip or the middle finger used in ancient
times. 1 cubit = 1.5 feet An examination of the Great Pyramids of Egypt and other
buildings makes it clear that the Egyptians at a very early stage incorporated a
measurement system. 2 Kings 18:20-22, Isaiah 36:5-7 The principal unit of
measurement in ancient Egypt was the royal cubit, a length we know to have been
52.4 cm, approximating the length of a man's forearm.

to one-eighth of a mile, 73.3 reeds, 201.168 meters , 220 yards, 434.6 cubits, or 660 feet.
It originated as an Old English compound formed from furh ‘furrow’ and lang ‘long’ –
