Recommendations

There were a few recommendations in order to overcome the possible errors in this
experiment. Firstly, the chemicals preparation of dilutions of NaOH and ethyl acetate should
be prepared carefully so that the disrupted result can occur. Secondly, the batch must be
cleaned before and after the usage of the experiments to avoid the contamination. Other than
that, all the wires and other equipment involved must undergo frequent maintenance. Lastly,
time must be sufficient to prevent required data to not be obtained.
Conclusion

The purpose of this batch reactor experiment is to study the liquid phase reaction kinetics in
a batch reactor, to study the operation of a batch reactor at different operating conditions in
terms of conversion, to study the effect of temperature on the reaction in CSTR. Based on the
results obtained, the temperature and conductivity for each was 40ºC, 50ºC and 60ºC at 0
minutes until 30 minutes the results have been recorded in the table given. Based on the first
and second graph, it was a standard calibration curve of concentration of NaOH (M) against
the conductivity of NaOH (mS/cm) was plotted. Then, the calibration graph, linear equations
were obtained to find the slope and y-axis intercept. Then, from the equation the data for
concentration of NaOH (M) and the conversion (%) was calculated. Next, the value of -
dCA/dt, In [-dCA/dt], and 1/CA and also the 1/T. All of the value need to be obtained through
the calculation using all the raw data from the results table and the graph that has been plotted
earlier (refer the table). As the closure, based on the collision theory, for a reaction that take
place in the experiment all the particles of the substances that are reacting have to collide.
The particles will react if they collide with enough energy. When temperature increases
during the reaction all the particles will moves faster. Thus, the collision that take place will
become higher, this will cause the molecules to collide with each other and producing more
energy in higher reaction rate. Furthermore, as the temperature increases, the rate of

1. Discuss the advantages and the disadvantages of using the batch reactors in chemical
reaction.

Advantages
- High conversion per unit volume for one pass.
- Easy to clean
Disadvantages
- High operating cost.
- Large size scale

2. Determine the effect of the temperature on chemical reaction.

- Particles can only react when they collide. If you heat a substance, the particles move
faster and so collide more frequently. That will speed up the rate of reaction.
Therefore, as two chemicals react, their molecules have to collide with each other
with sufficient energy for the reaction to take place. This is the collision theory and
also these two particles will react only if hey have enough energy. Increasing the
temperature will increases the reaction rate because of the disproportionately large
increases in the number of high energy collision. It is only these collision which
results in a reaction.

3. Write down the function of the component in the batch reactor used in this
experiment.
 Stirrer
- To mix the chemicals in a batch reactor
 Thermocouple
- To monitor and act as a sensor device in a batch contents temperature.
 Temperature controller
- Quick response to heating and cooling loads and proper wall temperature of the batch
reactor.
