1 (4) Treatment in the event of dissatisfaction with (1) to (3)
If the delaying rate of handrail or the length of spring of handrail
drive is not up to the standard, check and adjust handrail drive.
① Check the handrail drive sheave, and replace it in case of
following condition.
a. Outer diameter is less than 585mm by wear of rubber.(Outer
diameter of new one is 587mm)
b. A crack is found on rubber face.
c. Rubber face is dirty conspicuously.
Dust is stuck on rubber face so firmly that it cannot be
removed.
When a crack occurs on surface of handrail, resistance in
running handrail increases and handrail slips. In this case,
adjust particularly tension of handrail.
② Check whether the right and the left clearances between
handrail and handrail drive sheave are equal or not (Fig.3). If
these clearances are not equal, adjust handrail guide by
following procedure (“a” to “f”). When handrail runs in the
state where handrail contacts with handrail drive sheave
strongly, the resistance to run handrail gets increased and it
causes abnormal noise.

forcedly or contacts with it firmly, adjust the position of
handrail guide for width and height direction.
i The lower edge of the upper and the lower newel.
ii The both side of the handrail driving sheave.
iii The both edges of the take-up device.
d. Check and adjust the guide according to No2.
e. Check canvas surface of handrail.
Check if foreign substance is attached or mixed. If it is found,
remove it.
f. Do following works, if the dissatisfaction is not improved by
the check, the adjustment and the replacement of parts above
mentioned (a to e).
i Give additional fastening to the spring of handrail drive
until enough driving force is gained.
ii In fastening, give 1/3 turn (0.5mm) to the nut or the bolt at
each time. Be cautious not to exceed the limit by fastening.
iii Measure and record the length of spring, the speed of
handrail, and the force required stopping handrail.
iv If the speed of handrail or the force is not up to the
reference value after fastening the spring until the limit,
give 2 or 3 sweeps by wire brush over all circumference of
handrail and remove worn canvas-dust by means of a
vacuum cleaner or its equivalent.

Even if the treatment “f” above does not improve the situation,
there is something wrong with handrail. So, replace handrail
judging that it cannot be used anymore because of oil stuck on it
or getting canvas worn or scraped.

1 Check following items if:
a. Handrail goes into or out of inlet smoothly.
b. Handrail between take-up device and guiding roller near
inclination part makes smooth curve.
c. Handrail touches the roller of the handrail speed delay-
sensing device and its roller rotate smoothly with handrail.
(In case that it is equipped.)

Caution) Never apply tension to handrail with take-up device.

Take-up device is not one to give tension to handrail but to
absorb the manufacturing and installing errors. Don’t give
tension to handrail by take-up device, because giving handrail
too much tension causes to increase the resistance in running
handrail, decrease the speed of handrail and give drive unit an
overload.
Besides giving handrail little tension causes to contact handrail
with guide at lower newel in running upward and increase the
resistance to run handrail, make handrail hot, and produces
noise. Therefore, adjust tension of handrail adequately.

(7) Cleaning handrail

Clean canvas face of handrail, drive sheave, and guide rail at the
following cycle.
① In installation and after trial run.
② Three months after escalator is brought into service or
handrail is replaced.
③ Once every 12 to 18 months.
④ If much worn powder is found, do cleaning and investigate its
reason irrespective of ①to ③.
How to treat the handrail
Washing Light dirt Squeeze a cloth well in clean water and, after wiping a
handrail several times, wipe it with a dry cloth.
Noticeable dirt Wipe the handrail with a cloth using a neutral
detergent thinned ten times or more. After the dirt is
wiped off, wipe off the detergent with a cloth squeezed
in clean water, wipe the handrail with a dry cloth.
Too contaminated Wipe off the dirt with a cloth using ethyl alcohol. After
with oil or gum to be the dirt is removed off, wipe the handrail with a wet
wiped off cloth, wipe the handrail with a dry cloth.
However, for a handrail made of SBR, a use of
alcohol is strictly forbidden and always uses a
neutral detergent.
Disinfecting If the handrail needs to be disinfected, thin an inverted soap on the market 100
times or more, wipe the handrail lightly with a cloth with the soap.

4 An elongation and tension of a chains and belt

A. Handrail drive chains

Conduct following items at the first inspection, and repeat them
once in every three months.
(1) To check the amount of slack of chains
① How to check
Stretch the center at the anti-loaded side of a chains (slack side)
by hand, move it in the right-angled direction, and check the
amount of sag SS’ and record it. [see Fig.9]. If the amount of sag
SS’ is not settled in the following reference value, the SS’ is
adjusted after referring to 4-A-②.
Reference value of the chain sag SS’ :2% to 4% of span “L”

[Example]When the span between adjacent sprockets is 800mm, the

reference value of the amount of chain sag is 16mm to 32mm.

Fig.9

[Example]It is shown in Fig.10 that the sag amount of handrail

drive chains when escalator is stopped after running downward.
However, the amount of sag which is showed in Fig.10 is the thing of
standard escalator, the span between sprockets should be checked for
each JOB.

the position of driving sheave shaft with the adjusting bolts.
(see Fig.12)
At this time, move the right and the left bearing unit by the
same dimension. (Because the sheave has been already aligned
in the factory.)
(2) To check intervention of chains.
Check if the chains at loosened side shall not interfere with wire,
truss, and other parts.
(3) To check elongation of chains.
① How to check.
Measure the elongation of chains by the side of load of it, by
the following processes.
[How to measure][Fig.11]
a. In order to remove the overall play of the chains, put the
chains under somewhat tensioned state.
b. Measure the inside length (L1) and the outside length (L2)
between the rollers of the number of links as shown in
Fig.11, and calculate the judgement length (L) by using
following formula. In addition, apply the basic dimensions
(refer to table 1) to the following formulas, and calculate
elongation of the chains, and check whether the elongation
is settled in the reference value.
c. When you measure the lengths, take 6 or 8 or 10 links to
minimize the measuring error.

a. Loosen the spring of tension-carriage at both sides, and
check if carrier moves smoothly. If it does not move
smoothly, remove rust and the other foreign material
between bushing of wheel and pin and between wheel and
rail, and lubricate there.
b. If it does not improve after performing treatment of ”a”,
unbalanced elongation at right and left step chains occurs.
Change the formation of them by following procedure.
If a unit of chains of elongation more than 0.3% is found,
replace it unit with new one.

〈Procedure in changing formation of step chains〉

a. Measure the length “L1”of a unit of right and left step
chains in inclination section according to drawing of
formation of step chains.(see Fig.28)
b. Calculate the accumulated errors of right and left step
chains by filling in Table3 with L1 (measured length), L0
(basic dimension shown in table 2).
c. Find the formation that minimizes accumulated error of right
and left step chains. Change the formation of right and left
step chains, if needed, exchange adjacent units each other.
Caution) Step chains are required to removed from axle shaft
in changing the formation of right and left step chains
because the shapes of right and left step chains are different.
d. Check “a” again.

13 Cleaning

Remove all steps and clean lower and upper machine rooms and drip
pans at inclination section once a year. For outdoor type, touch-up to
the part where painting peeled off at the same time.

14 Other

(1) Coat high polymer lubricant (silicone material) to the skirt panel
(in case of hairline finished stainless steel) periodically, to prevent
shoes and others from trapping.
Caution) Never coat silicone material to the step tread since a
passenger may fall down.
(2) Handle step carefully not to damage it (ex. riser) in removing it at
the reversal section in the lower part.
(3) If the installation and detaching of the “B” molding fixing screws
are repeated, the barr might occur on the screw head. In case that
barr occurred, replace it with new one to prevent user's clothes
caught on it.
