At present, the contribution of technology is fundamental in all areas however, it is especially

essential with regard to medicine and to dentistry. It’s said that an interrelation between
dentistry and the technology must exist, since the handling of equipment, for example, like
system CAD-CAM is part of the technological advances that have come developing through
time.

The use of technological equipment as aids in dental processes; From the point of view of the general
context, it is necessary to apply it within the dentistry curriculum within the Autónoma University of
Manizales in areas where oral rehabilitation issues are handled, taking into account that currently
have greatly reduced each of the processes that are carried out in the execution of a dental work, this
supported by technological advances and a platform system with ability to carry out from its initial
processes, adaptation, remodeling to reach its final disposition in the elaborated product.

Based on the above, within the Autónoma University of Manizales, credits are fulfilled in areas where
manual handling of materials are carried out, theoretical knowledge of guidelines and finally the
completion of each of the steps to achieve the objectives proposed which is of the utmost importance,
because its recognition and dominance are necessary since they are still used and were the initial
bases that were given; but with the technology its advances, and the acquisition of these equipment
already in the Autonomous University of Manizales it is believed that it is also great important to have
access and training in the use of them, because finally the current generation, the means, it has not
had the adequate knowledge to proceed to use it; besides, it must be taken into account that in many
laboratories of the city of Manizales and the rest of the country they already know and have it, and is
uses it to carry out works destined for dental offices and clinics; as dentists when receiving a job of
this type.

For this reason, we would like to know the knowledge of new technologies applicable in the field of
dentistry in our university, taking into account that recently our institution acquired the CAD-CAM
system, which by means of a machining gives us the opportunity to design and make a dental
restoration in less time without having to work in the laboratory.

CAD-CAM SYSTEM
• HISTORICAL REVIEW
In dentistry began the use of CAD CAM technology in the early 80s in the United States and Europe,
through which could be manufactured restorations designed on a computer and manufactured by a
process of milling in a robotic system. The two pioneer companies in this technology worldwide were
the company Nobelbiocare (Sweden) with its product Procera and the company Sirona - Simens
(Germany) with its product Cerec. These two technologies have progressed significantly and today
represent a breakthrough in the way we treat our patients in dentistry.
Among the indications of this technology in dentistry are the manufacture of crowns, prostheses,
veneers or sheets and incrustations. These restorations can be made in porcelain or ceramic without
metal and with the latest versions can be made prostheses up to 6 teeth attached.
Another indication is to manufacture highly accurate structures for patients who have been
rehabilitated with implants.
· The latest advance of CAD CAM technology is the design of surgical guides for the placement of
implants, these guides are manufactured in a robotic way which guarantees maximum precision and
what generates a highly accurate surgery without trauma for the patient.
· High aesthetics due to the fact that it uses highly translucent ceramics
· Precision in the adaptation of the teeth, which guarantees its good prognosis over time
· Laboratory time is unnecessary, because its functions are robotized in its entirety.
· Versatility in the software

DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
1.Scanning process of the tooth prepared either by means of a laser or by means of physical contact.
2.Design of the restoration by means of software.
3.Robotic milling of the restoration.
All this process to be done in a computerized way is a highly accurate, standardized and very fast
process. Through this technology it is possible to make crowns from one day to another standardized.
JUSTIFICATION
As students we intend to verify the knowledge that have in the community of this type of tools through
a questionnaire which consists of a series of precise questions, where the person can give us
conclusive answer that do not allow the justification of the above in the same way, we will interview a
teacher that expands us the information off the information of the arrival of this new technology the
expands us the information of the arrival of this new technology to the university.

Best Regard¡¡
The following questions are intended to gather information on the new technologies applicable in the
field of dentistry, with the purpose of identifying the knowledge that the community of the Autonoma
University of Manizales has about them; For this reason we request your valuable collaboration.
