The Globe Theatre

The Globe Theatre, on the River Thames in London, is one of the most important theaters in the
world. Every day, thousands of people watch Shakespeare there. It’s an open-air theater, which
means it is outside, and the show goes on, even in the rain!

The theater actors built the original theater in 1599. For 14 years, people enjoyed many of
Shakespeare’s greatest plays, but during a 1613 show of Henry VIII, fire burned down the theater in
about an hour.

In 1997, people built the current theater just meters from the original. Today, about 1600 people can
watch a show at the same time. The Globe, however, isn’t just for watching Shakespeare. You can
take a tour of the theater, go to storytelling events, hear talks by world famous experts, and listen to
music concerts. The Globe is one place you don’t want to miss!

One project they work on is the Big Cats Initiative. The Initiative works to save 7 different kinds of
big cats in 27 countries. Some big cats, like cheetahs, lions, and tigers, are endangered. These animals
lose more of their habitat every year. People are another problem. Some people poach big cats. Some
