How do I transfer a voice recording from an Olympus VN-7100? Is there is a chip or a converter to
attach or even a service I can pay to transfer the recording?

Hello and welcome. Some model are more basic than other and even if there is a folder
structure inside the recorder, there is no way to export that file system outside the machine.

That said, you sure can extract the voice recording by connecting the earphone output to your
PC audio input line. This is not like a USB transfer and is like recording from a tape machine to
another tape machine, meaning that a 10 minutes recording will take 10 minutes to get into the
PC (real time recording). You will also have a small signal degradation because it is an analog
transfer but the sampling rate of PC is so high that you will not notice a difference. You can
record them as wav or mp3 files.

Windows have it's own sound recording application (like most operating system), but if you
want something fancier there is plenty of freeware for that, like this one:

You need an audio cable with both end being male 3.5 mm. You can usually found this at
Walmart or Radio Shack. Those are common cable usually easy to find.

Ask Your Own Camera and Video Question

Customer:
If it is 1 hour 38 min recording, what size will be file in the PC after the that transfer?

Expert: Martin
To give you an easy rule to remember, a 74 min audio CD have a 650MB capacity. So in your case if
you record as wav, you will need 861MB. This is uncompressed audio worst case scenario of a stereo
recording, it can be a lot less if you record as mp3 (depending of the quality setting).

Audio Recording to Computer file LOCKED

jeek1990 2 years ago

I have recorded something on an Olympus VN-7100 digital voice recorder and want to transfer it onto
my computer as a file. I don't see a USB port anywhere on the recorder so I'm wondering how to do
this.

What's the point of that? Why would he want to downgrade his recording from stereo to
mono?

> Surf web quietly and drink tea.

He doesn't need to be quiet. The signal is being fed directly into the sound card via cable,
therefore no background audio will be heard.

I plugged the audio cable into "Ear" on the recorder and "Mic" on computer. I set the recorders volume to 7 or so,
and I also TURNed OFF Noise Cancellation. (Hold the recorders Menu button 10 seconds then tab through the
different setting - Noise Can? = No.) I started a New recording in Audacity - then I pushed Play on the recorder. I
have to monitor the recording. The recorder's playback stops automatically but I have to stop Audacity's recording
manually.

You can use edit functions in Audacity to cut off the lead, or filter out background noise, cut bloopers, etc. Also note,
in Audacity it will be a Mono recording. You can copy and paste the recording to right and left tracks to make it
Stereo. Export the file when you are done as an MP3.

I use it to record storytelling shows, practice and memorize new stories, send good sets to a far away friend. It is not
super high quality recording but it is good enough for the spoken word.

Three things about using the recorder itself... when you are recording always slide the power button down - that is
your hold button. More than once I have accidentally bumped a button and turn off the recording 5 minutes into a
performance!

Also as soon as your recording is done, lock the file! I accidentally erased 2 months worth of performances in one
fell swoop. I am not sure how I did it either. To lock a file, hold the menu button for ten seconds. Then tab through
the selections until you get to Lock. Change it to Lock=Yes, then tab some more and press Stop. When a file is
locked it has a tiny padlock above it. Do it so you won't regret it.

Last I keep the Mic setting on Low all the time (again, hold Menu button 10 sec...). On High Mic I get a lot of
background noise, and a Lo mic will easily record people talking to me, an emcee introducing me with a PA system,
audience applause, amplified lectures, etc. If in doubt (like in a group discussion around a big table) check the
recording quality at your earliest convenience.

Good luck and happy recording.

Great for my college student
By Julie A. Smith "Julie @ Knitting and Sundries" on October 20, 2011

When my daughter called me and said, "Mom; it would be SO helpful for me to have a voice recorder for classes", I
came right here to Amazon, read some reviews, and went with this mid-priced model. According to my daughter, it
is worth it's weight in gold to her. It's easy to use (which is a definite plus) and very good at picking up her
professors' lectures, capturing in digital form what she wasn't able to catch in her notes. A very good buy without
breaking the bank!

I bought this voice recorder to keep up with this rather fast-speaking lecturer. From a college student's point of view:

Pros: 1) Functions well: picks up a professor's lecture approximately about four lecture seat-rows away without too
much noise. 2) Functions are intuitive enough. 3) The price is good. 4) Stylish. I was somewhat hesitant in buying a
voice recorder in fear of appearing "nerdy," but this comes with a pouch that effectively hides the recorder (which
doesn't cover the microphone, so recordings aren't muffled) and its size is similar to that of a cell phone, so most
people don't even recognize I have a recorder out on the table.

Cons: 1) No USB. This is rather uncomfortable not only for its own sake but also because 2) No easy skip-to
function. A "point" in a lecture runs about 5 minutes, so if I lose track of what the lecturer is saying, I have to press
and hold down the rewind button. Seems simple enough, but gets tiring after several times. Bookmark function is
provided, though. 3) To hear better and to avoid noise, I usually use a headphone or an earphone, but this recorder
only produces sound in one side of the ear. I found this very tiring.

Mighty Mite
By J. Meginnes on March 30, 2012

I bought this recorder to use with my work. I am a writer for a small newspaper and I often interview people for
feature stories. The first time I used this was for a large feature which required about 3 hours of recording. It was a
great help. I still ended up taking hand-written notes, but this is an excellent back-up. If I have a question about
something that was said, or I'm making a direct quote, it is easy to verify.
The recorder was easy to use, very small and easy to carry, picked up voices well and play back and pause were
easy to activate. The voice quality is not amazing, but not bad either. Reasonably priced. There is no computer
connection but I didn't care about this anyway.
In short, it operates well and does what it is supposed to at a very reasonable price.

For $2 more buy Olympus Model 142645 - This one is trash
By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle on July 27, 2013
Verified Purchase
Buy the Olympus VN-7000 Digital Voice Recorder 142645 for $2 more, or you may regret it.

I have used Olympus digital dictators approximately 50 times a day as my "mechanical memory" for decades. I
have owned at least a hundred of them, and always keep a half dozen in stock.

I obviously think they are great. But this model is the worst, by far.

The first thing you will notice is that it is a cheap piece of plastic. Who cares if it works, and but it has horrible bugs,
there is no need to tolerate.

The problem with this model is that the memory shuts itself off complete, so every time you want to make a 5
second notation, you need to take ten seconds to go through a memory re-boot procedure. It doesn't sound like
much, and if you are recording a conference and turning it on once a day, it is not. But if you use it all day long, like I
do, for keeping the to do list of a busy businessman, it is completely unacceptable and persistent annoyance. This
one is going it the trash, brand new. I have never done that to an Olympus dictator before.

Another problem, for someone like myself, who has a half dozen dictators in service at one time, having the pause
switch "on" position reversed from every other model, and essential for the annoying boot up process described
above, is a compounded annoyance. On second thought, a sledge hammer would be a more satisfying than the
trash can.

Buy Olympus VN-7000 Digital Voice Recorder 142645 instead. It is a great unit for virtually the same price, looks
the same, but works much better, and has a long, reliable life.

Very easy to use by feel in the dark. I use it to record dreams so I don't have to get up and write them until morning.
Sound quality is excellent. If it holds up for the long haul I'll be 100% impressed.

Easy to use, NO USB FOR CONNECTING TO COMPUTER
By Steveyboy on February 20, 2012
Verified Purchase
I bought this product to record lectures in class and be able to review them in my own time. I intended on being able
to save my recordings on my computer so I'd be able to then transfer the files to my ipod and listen to them when
driving or going for my morning run.I probably should have done better research on this product before I bought it
becasue much to my surprise (and disappointment), there is absolutely no way to connect this to a computer to
save the files.

Other than this, it recorded beautifully and replays like a charm but you have to reply it directly from thee unit itself.

In short, if you don't mind having to listen to your recordings directly from the device, I highly recommend this for
you. If you want to save your files on any other electronic device such as a computer or ipod, find something with a
USB port.

I really love this recorder. Its easy to use, and hard to erase things that you dont want to. My 5 year old is able to
use it with no problem. Its budget friendly and the batteries are long lasting. I would recommend it as a simple
recorder.
