Rotary Highlights
Lobster Fest, Teacher Grants, and
Veteran Car Donations

Belmont Redwood Shores Rotary Lobster Fest was once again
an incredible event, held January 27th with almost 250 people
in attendance. is is the Rotary Club’s major fundraiser
with much of the proceeds going to educational scholarships
for local High School Students, Teacher Mini-Grants for
school teachers along with other community service projects.
Perhaps the biggest highlight of the evening was the
presentation from the Belmont Redwood Shores Rotary Cars
for Vets program of a 2006 Honda Odyssey to Marine SSgt.
Jevon Coley. When vehicles are donated to the club, Summit
Auto Body in Belmont has the vehicles safety checked,
coordinating with local auto shops to take care of any needed
repairs. Summit also takes care of any minor body work, has
the vehicle smog checked, and then details the vehicles.

SanDPiPer roBoTicS ToUrnaMenT
Last month, Sandpiper School hosted a robotics tournament for
37 elementary and middle school teams from across the region.
Teams from both Nesbit School and Sandpiper School took the
top honors. ank you to Redwood City Mayor Ian Bain for
presenting the trophies and to Principal Tami Moore for
organizing the event! We are incredibly proud of our students,
and a number of teams have qualified for the state-level
tournament. We’ll keep you informed as they progress.
Historically, we have had teams participate in the
national/international level tournament in Kentucky in April.

and adoption in fall 2018. Our current history textbooks are
over 10 years old, and the proposed budget from the state
provides an allocation of one-time funding, for which this is a
perfect use. Consistent with our strategic plan, these new
materials will provide an excellent foundation for us to prepare
our students to be global citizens who are culturally aware,
environmentally responsible, and civically engaged.

(How a Connecticut Yankee embraced California Cuisine)

KISS ME, I’M IRISH!
Who doesn’t love St. Patrick’s Day? Great parades, Irish
wolfhounds, step dancing Irish lasses and laddies, a pint of
Guinness and of course, the traditional corned beef and cabbage.
It always seemed as though the Chicago and New York City
St. Patrick’s Day Parades were the most intriguing and colorful.
I couldn’t wait to see those elegant yet craggy Irish wolfhounds
– it was the highlight of watching the parades.
We always celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with the traditional
boiled New England dinner of corned beef, cabbage, potatoes
and carrots, yet even as a youngster, it seemed to me that
everything tasted the same, i.e. of boiled corned beef. I longed
for more distinctive flavors. It wasn’t until I moved to
California, particularly Mill Valley, that I started my quest to
discover more flavorful presentations. I longed for succulent
