Who is at risk?
While anyone can be affected by mental illness or
suicidal thoughts at some point in their life, there
are some factors and circumstances that can put
people at more risk than others.
Groups who experience discrimination,
such as refugees, LGBTI people, and
indigenous people;

People with a history of or current

mental illness such as depression or
who have had thoughts about or
have attempted suicide in the past;

People who have had adverse early life experiences

– experiencing or being exposed to violence, abuse,
neglect, death or a significant loss or trauma;

People who are experiencing life stresses, such

as family or relationship breakdown, chronic
illness, school or work stress;

People who are marginalized from the

community, including those disengaged from
school, family and friends;

People with a family history of mental illness;

Individual psychological factors can impact

risk – including self-esteem, coping skills and
thinking style;

People who have a serious illness or physical injury;

Drug and alcohol use and experimentation can

also impact risk.
