Teacher and students are reviewing story elements like Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution.

On the board is drawn the following figure:

1. Teacher: So…what does this remind you of?

2. Student1: A mountain.
3. Teacher: A mountain. Alrighty….So could someone tell me what is the first part of a story? Like what
4. starts out a story usually? From here to here to here (points to diagram on board). Kyle?
5. Student2: A problem?
6. Teacher: A problem? OK…. (Writes on board). Yes?
7. Student3: A climax.
8. Teacher: Climax. (Writes on board). That would be right up there.
9. Student4: The characters?
10. Teacher: OK. (Writes on board). The characters and problems and stuff—what is that called? At the
11. beginning of a story?
12. Student5: Introduction?
13. Teacher: Introduction? Introduction’s a word for it. There’s another word that starts with an “E.” ….
14. The “ex_______”…Jillian?
15. Student1: Exposition?
16. Teacher: It’s an exposition. It’s this thing when you’re introducing the characters and other stuff, so
17. you’re right when you say “introduction” but “exposition” is a better word for it if you want to
18. get technical. Yes?
19. Student4: The conflict?
20. Teacher: A conflict. That’s also in the Exposition (writes). It’s the main conflict of the story. OK, what’s
21. this then? … What’s this part here? … If we have the Exposition, if we have the climax, how do
22. you get there? Yeah?
23. Student5: Don’t they call it “Rising Action”?
24. Teacher: Rising Action. Good! OK, so you have your Exposition and your Rising Action, that gets you to
25. your Climax. What happens after that? What happens after? … Yes?
26. Student6: Resolution?
27. Teacher: Almost. Resolution is down here. After everything is said and done, that’s the resolution. So
28. what comes before the Resolution? If you have the Exposition, then the RISING action to get to
29. the Climax, what comes before the resolution? Connor? … What do you think? … What’s the
30. opposite of “Rising”?
31. Student2: Falling.
