1. INTRODUCTION
This specification covers the minimum requirements for the design, manufacture and testing of
electrical power and control cables.
2. STANDARDS
2.1 Project specifications
S-000-1380-0001V Electrical Specification
4. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
4.1 General
The cable specifications listed in this standard are to be considered the minimum requirements.
All cables shall be circular in cross section and substantially compact with extruded bedding and
fillers.
No joints (splices) shall be permitted in any cable unless specifically advised otherwise.
Fillers shall be non hygroscopic.
Cable screens are applicable to cable voltages 3.6/6(7.2)kV to 18/30(36)kV
All power and control cables shall be wire armoured except EPR/PVC cables used for transformer
secondary installation.
When specified, fire resistant and flame retardant cables to IEC 60331 / IEC 60332-1 respectively
shall be provided.

4.2 Identification
Outer sheath colour coding shall generally be:
• LV Power cables below 0.6/1(1.2)kV grade Black
• HV Power cables from 3.6/6(7.2)kV Red
• HV Power cables from 6/10(12)kV Red
• HV Power cables from 18/30(36)kV Red
• Earthing cables Green/yellow
Power cable core colour coding shall generally be;
• 1core Black
• 2core Brown, Blue
• 3core Brown, Black, Grey
• 4core Brown, Black, Grey, Blue
• Earth core Green/Yellow
Control Cable core colour shall be;
• Less than 5 cores Same as power cable
• 5 core and more White with black numbers
The outer sheath of each cable shall be marked with the following minimum information along the
cable length at 1 metre intervals:
• Vendor’s name and year of manufacture
• voltage rating
• cable type & size (include flame retardant or fire resistant, when applied)

4.5 Conductor
Plain annealed copper stranded, Class 2 as per IEC 60228. The Vendor shall manufacture all
cables with circular conductors. Any deviation to shaped conductors requires prior approval.
4.6 Insulation
Both XLPE and EPR insulation are used on cables 1000V and above and as a general guideline.
XLPE is for general use. EPR should be used for transformer secondary cabling installation.
Low smoke zero halogen (LSZH) cables are to be used when it is required to limit the emission of
smoke and corrosive gasses.

• or XLPE insulated, screened, non hygroscopic fillers, extruded PVC bedded, lead
sheathed(LS), PVC covered, steel wire armoured(SWA) and PVC sheathed,
(XLPE/MS/PVC/LS/PVC/SWA/PVC), in accordance with IEC 60502. Alternatively, PVC
jacketed armoured cable with a proven inner hydrocarbon resistant barrier sheath cable
may be offered, subject to Employer review and approval.
Earthing conductor
Horizontal electrode (Earth network conductor):
• stranded bare soft drawn copper conductor in accordance with IEC 60228
Branch conductor:
• voltage grade 450/750V
• single core, polyvinyl chloride(PVC) insulated wire in accordance with IEC 60227.
4.8 Packing
Cable shall be delivered in standard manufacturing drum length, unless a specific length is
required.

Drum lengths shall be continuous. Cable or conductor jointing in any form is not acceptable.
Cable drum radius should not be less than 125% of the minimum bending radius of the cables.
Cable ends shall be fitted with a heat shrink cap to prevent entry of moisture inside the cable and
shall be fixed to the drum.
Cable shall be shipped on non returnable drums.
The drums shall be covered with suitable material, to provide physical protection during transit,
ordinary storage and handling operations.
5.2 Tests
Copies of type test certificate shall be supplied with quotation for purchaser’s review as per
contract documents.
These tests shall be performed by Vendor and shall be in accordance with the relevant IEC
standards.
The Vendor shall supply with his bid a complete description of proposed test procedures. These
tests shall include but shall not be limited to the following:
