1. INTRODUCTION
This specification covers the minimum requirements for the design, manufacture and testing of
electrical power and control cables.

2. STANDARDS
2.1 Project specifications

2.2 International standards


The assemblies and the Materials therein shall conform to the requirements of the latest issues
and most recent revisions and amendments of the standards listed in appendix 1
.
2.3 Conflicting requirements
In case of conflicting requirements, reference shall be made to the order of precedence in the
Engineering Design Basis document 8820-SP-0006
.
3. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Site conditions
All cables shall be suitable for use in a humid, salt laden, corrosive atmosphere and shall be
suitable for continuous operation at the Site service conditions.
Cables will be installed both indoors and outdoors. Cables installed outdoors shall be able to
withstand prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and high atmospheric temperatures.

4. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
4.1 General
The cable specifications listed in this standard are to be considered the minimum requirements.
All cables shall be circular in cross section and substantially compact with extruded bedding and
fillers.
No joints (splices) shall be permitted in any cable unless specifically advised otherwise.
Fillers shall be non hygroscopic.
Cable screens are applicable to cable voltages 3.6/6(7.2)kV to 18/30(36)kV
All power and control cables shall be wire armoured except EPR/PVC cables used for transformer
secondary installation.
When specified, fire resistant and flame retardant cables to IEC 60331 / IEC 60332-1 respectively
shall be provided.

4.2 Identification
Outer sheath colour coding shall generally be:
• LV Power cables below 0.6/1(1.2)kV grade Black
• HV Power cables from 3.6/6(7.2)kV Red
• HV Power cables from 6/10(12)kV Red
• HV Power cables from 18/30(36)kV Red
• Earthing cables Green/yellow
Power cable core colour coding shall generally be;
• 1core Black
• 2core Brown, Blue
• 3core Brown, Black, Grey
• 4core Brown, Black, Grey, Blue
• Earth core Green/Yellow
Control Cable core colour shall be;
• Less than 5 cores Same as power cable
• 5 core and more White with black numbers
The outer sheath of each cable shall be marked with the following minimum information along the
cable length at 1 metre intervals:
• Vendor’s name and year of manufacture
• voltage rating
• cable type & size (include flame retardant or fire resistant, when applied)

4.3 Cable drum marking


Cable drums shall be indelibly marked as follows:
• drum number
• project name
• purchase order number
• rated voltage
• cable type
• number and cross section of cores/pairs
• length of cable on the drum (metres)
• overall weight of cable and drum (kgs)
• manufacture’s name and year of manufacture

4.4 Cable size


• maximum cable size for multi-core cables shall be 240mm2. Cables larger than 240mm2
shall be single core.
• minimum cable size for control cables shall be 1.5mm2.
• minimum power cable size for voltage 0.6/1(1.2)kV shall be 2.5mm2.
• minimum power cable size for voltage 3.6/6(7.2)kV shall be 16mm2.
• minimum power cable size for voltage 6/10(12) through 18/30(36)kV shall be 25mm2.
• 33kV cables shall be generally single core to minimise cable joints on installed lengths.
• minimum cross sectional area for a main earth conductor shall be a minimum of 70mm2.

4.5 Conductor
Plain annealed copper stranded, Class 2 as per IEC 60228. The Vendor shall manufacture all
cables with circular conductors. Any deviation to shaped conductors requires prior approval.

4.6 Insulation
Both XLPE and EPR insulation are used on cables 1000V and above and as a general guideline.
XLPE is for general use. EPR should be used for transformer secondary cabling installation.
Low smoke zero halogen (LSZH) cables are to be used when it is required to limit the emission of
smoke and corrosive gasses.

4.7 Cable specifications


Multicore cables:
System utilisation voltages of 1000 and below:
• voltage grade 0.6/1(1.2)kV
• cross-linked polyethylene(XLPE) insulated, non hygroscopic fillers, extruded polyvinyl
chloride(PVC) bedded, steel wire armoured(SWA) and polyvinyl chloride(PVC) sheathed,
(XLPE/PVC/SWA/PVC), in accordance with IEC 60502.
• or XLPE insulated, non hygroscopic fillers, extruded PVC bedded, lead sheathed(LS),
PVC covered, steel wire armoured(SWA) and PVC sheathed,
(XLPE/PVC/LS/PVC/SWA/PVC), in accordance with IEC 60502. Alternatively, PVC
jacketed armoured cable with a proven inner hydrocarbon resistant barrier sheath cable
may be offered, subject to Employer review and approval.
• or ethylene propylene rubber(EPR) insulation, non hygroscopic fillers and polyvinyl
chloride sheathed, (EPR/PVC), in accordance with IEC 60502.
System utilization voltages of 6600 up to 33000V:
• voltage grade 3.6/6(7.2)kV or 6/10(12)kV or 18/30(36)kV
• XLPE insulated, screened, non hygroscopic fillers, extruded PVC bedded, steel wire
armoured and PVC sheathed, (XLPE/MS/PVC/SWA/PVC), in accordance with IEC 60502

• or XLPE insulated, screened, non hygroscopic fillers, extruded PVC bedded, lead

jacketed armoured cable with a proven inner hydrocarbon resistant barrier sheath cable
may be offered, subject to Employer review and approval.

Single core cables:


System utilisation voltages of 1000V and below:
• voltage grade 0.6/1(1.2)kV
• single core, XLPE insulated, extruded PVC bedded, aluminium wire armoured and PVC
sheathed (XLPE/PVC/AWA/PVC) in accordance with IEC 60502.
• or single core, XLPE insulated, extruded PVC bedded, lead sheathed(LS), PVC covered,
aluminium wire armoured(AWA) and PVC sheathed, (XLPE/PVC/LS/PVC/AWA/PVC), in
accordance with IEC 60502. Alternatively, PVC jacketed armoured cable with a proven
inner hydrocarbon resistant barrier sheath cable may be offered, subject to Employer
review and approval.
• or single core, EPR insulated and PVC sheathed (EPR/PVC) in accordance with IEC
60502.
System utilisation voltages of 6600V up to 33000V:
• voltage grade 3.6/6(7.2)kV or 6/10(12)kV or 18/30(36)kV
• single core, XLPE insulated, screened, extruded PVC bedded, aluminium wire armoured
and PVC sheathed (XLPE/MS/PVC/AWA/PVC) in accordance with IEC 60502.
• or single core, XLPE insulated, screened, extruded PVC bedded, lead sheathed(LS), PVC
covered, aluminium wire armoured(AWA) and PVC sheathed,
(XLPE/MS/PVC/LS/PVC/AWA/PVC), in accordance with IEC 60502. Alternatively, PVC
jacketed armoured cable with a proven inner hydrocarbon resistant barrier sheath cable
may be offered, subject to Employer review and approval.
• or single core, EPR insulated, screened and polyvinyl chloride sheathed (EPR/MS/PVC) in
accordance with IEC 60502. At rated voltage 3.6/6(7.2)kV cables insulated with EPR may
be unscreened, provided the larger insulation thickness.

Earthing conductor
Horizontal electrode (Earth network conductor):
• stranded bare soft drawn copper conductor in accordance with IEC 60228
Branch conductor:
• voltage grade 450/750V
• single core, polyvinyl chloride(PVC) insulated wire in accordance with IEC 60227.

4.8 Packing
Cable shall be delivered in standard manufacturing drum length, unless a specific length is
required.

Drum lengths shall be continuous. Cable or conductor jointing in any form is not acceptable.
Cable drum radius should not be less than 125% of the minimum bending radius of the cables.
Cable ends shall be fitted with a heat shrink cap to prevent entry of moisture inside the cable and
shall be fixed to the drum.
Cable shall be shipped on non returnable drums.
The drums shall be covered with suitable material, to provide physical protection during transit,
ordinary storage and handling operations.

5. INSPECTION AND TESTS


5.1 Inspection
Cables may be subject to inspection during manufacturing and testing at Contractors discretion.
Vendor shall provide access for inspection or surveillance if required by Contractor.
These tests shall be performed either on all finished cable lengths or on samples of completed
cables.

5.2 Tests
Copies of type test certificate shall be supplied with quotation for purchaser’s review as per
contract documents.
These tests shall be performed by Vendor and shall be in accordance with the relevant IEC
standards.
The Vendor shall supply with his bid a complete description of proposed test procedures. These
tests shall include but shall not be limited to the following:

Qualitative and quantitative control of technical documentation given with cables and its
compliance with the particular specifications
Control of drums : quality of flanges, marking and labelling, cable designation, length, section size
and weight, observance of minimum curve radius, capping of terminations, packaging and
protection against shocks
Control of conformity with the technical documentation

5.4 Electrical tests according to IEC 60502


Routine test
• measurement of electrical resistance of conductors
• voltage test
• partial discharge test, applicable to 3.6/6(7.2)kV and above cables
