Belching
Stomach cramps.
Nausea
Bitter taste in mouth.
Root Causes
Out stomach is powered with couple of enzymes and secretion which mix up with material
taken by mouth and try to make it digestible. An acid called hydrochloric acid is one of them
that flow in the stomach. There are certain hormones that regulate this flow as per the food
eaten. Gastrin stimulates and Somatostatin suppresses the flow.
There are certain conditions like ulcer in which the secretion is either low or normal. Acidity
may cause other symptoms like dyspepsia, formation of ulcers (erosion of the lining of the
intestines or stomach) and heartburn. This situation tends to be in higher incidence in
nervous and emotional individuals. Now a day this problem has become big in developing
nations where the lifestyle is fast and people don’t prepare the food which is nourishing but
they depend on the food that can be quickly prepared. There are certain other factors like
alcohol, highly spicy foods, NSAID’s and non-vegetarian diet etc.
When there is excessive secretion of acidic material in the stomach it creates the burning
sensation. That is nothing but acidity. Acid dyspepsia and hyperacidity are one and the same
having almost same symptoms. Ayurveda describes this as excessive Pitta Dosha (one of the
three doshas.
Why Acidity ?
There are many causes like diet, incompatible food, emotions and nerve reflexes may impact
on the acid secretion.
* HIGHLY ACIDIC DIET – it is recommended that 80% of the diet should come from alkaline-
producing foods for most people. This refers to a large amount of fruits and vegetables
(alkaline-producing foods) and decreased acidic foods such as non-vegetarian, spicy oily,
cheesy and starches, etc.
* NEGATIVE EMOTIONS – it is fact that eating while one is angry or upset can surely raise
gastric hyperacidity.
* INCOMPATIBLE FOOD PATTERN – even though foods those are alkaline-producing or mildly
acidic may produce hyperacidity in the stomach and if consumed improperly. One of the
most noticeable evidence for improper food combining explained in numbers of books is
citrus and cereals. Here the chemicals that is needed to digest citrus and cereals are
incompatible finally resulting into gastric hyperacidity
* NERVE REFLEXES – the gastric secretions are affected by the nerve reflexes from nerve
centers which are in the cervical and thoracic areas of the spine. That is why somewhere in
certain readings gastric hyperacidity is attributed to somatic dysfunction.
Symptoms of Acidity
This has got typical sensation in stomach. One feels the burning sensation in the stomach.
Along with that there would be feeling of nausea (the sensation of vomiting). One does feel
something coming upward in direction from the stomach to the mouth. Usually this would
contain sour tasted material.
There could be steady pain of short duration felt in upper abdomen just below the
breastbone which is usually following after large spicy meal. There could be sour blenching
and heart burn. The sense of abdominal distension may be seen. Flatulence, burping and
lack of interest in food are not so uncommon factors.
Many times it is misunderstood with heartburn which is later stage of acidity in which the
content of stomach comes back to esophagus (the food pipe) affecting the heart region.
Ayurveda describes the excessive salivation in the condition of acidity along with stomach
cramps. Persons lose their interest having any type of food. The sufferer prefers to drink the
plain water instead of eating as drinking water suppresses the upcoming material from the
food pipe for time-being
Ayurveda describes many herbs that fight against aggravated Pitta Dosha. Some of them are
listed below…
There are plenty of Ayurvedic formulae available in the market. Ayurvedic texts
too, describe some of the classical remedy as mentioned below…
Acidity - Treatment
Medication recommended for Amlapitta (upward evacuation):
Emesis with mild emetic drugs and downward evacuation with laxatives.
After evacuation, purification of the body the patient should take snehapana (oleation
therapy) and shaman chikitsa ahara (pacificatory management) should be
administered.
Anuvasana basti (or enema prepared with unctuous substances and medicament).
Samshodhan Chikitsa in which all the three doshas are vitiated in amla pitta
samshodhan (evacuation).
