CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

A.Background of the Study

English is the leading foreign language and is considered as the second language all

over the world including Philippines. Though Filipino is the native language in the

Philippines, since 1898 when American teachers arrived in the Philippines and spread their

language, more and more Filipinos became fluent in speaking English language during that

time. During the post-independence era after 1946, English became the official language in

government and education. Filipinos learned English from Filipinos and the seeds of what

we call now Philippine English began (Gonzales, 1997:26-27).

Since English language began, it became one of the official languages and the

medium of instruction in some countries, from the perspective of the learning process, the

factors influencing language learning can be outlined as learning styles and strategies,

motivation and classroom instruction (Walqui, 2000)

Language is a very important means of communication. It is very difficult to think

of a society without language. It sharpens people thoughts and guide and controls their

entire activity. It is a carrier of civilization and culture (Bolinger, 1968). In the case of

mother tongue, the child learns it easily, due to the favourable environment and by the

great amount of exposure to the language. But, learning a second language in most cases is

limited (Bose, 2007). Majority of the students have favoured classroom instruction for the

second language acquisition (James, 1996).

The researcher believes that English language is still one of the main problems of

the student today. More students do not want to come into their English classes. They are

afraid to communicate using English language. They are afraid to commit a mistake while

speaking, that is why they cannot improve their fluency in speaking English language.

The researcher conduct a study entitled, Challenges in Learning English as a

Second Language. The study is an attempt to know the problems or challenges in learning

English as a second language and what would be the solutions to overcome it.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Based on the background of the researcher’s presentation, the researcher would like

to state the problem among the learners of second language.

The following questions were designed to fulfil the needs of this research.

1. Why some Filipino/students often find it hard to speak in English?

2. What are the problems or challenges encountered by the learners in learning

English?

3. What are the solutions to overcome the problems in learning English?

4. What are the benefits would you get in learning a second language?
