students to learn this concept? I am teaching this lesson where students will be able to have whole-group and small-
group discussions to help them understand how theme is developed over the course of a
story and revealed through details, including what the characters do, say, and learn.
It is important for students to learn this concept because theme allows readers to relate to
the characters and their experiences. It is also important because it teaches a lesson, and
life has many lessons to learn.

Meeting your students’ needs as If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural backgrounds of your
people and as learners students?
This lesson connects to the interests of my students because we live in an era where
media is very popular and frequently used, causing many distractions in life. Students use
media when they watch TV, play video games, or even when they use computers. Media
takes away the real-life experiences people enjoy, and I think each student can relate.
Media is even used everyday in the classroom and students might not see it as a
distraction, so this lesson will helps students to understand the message of the story

which is how watching too much TV can keep people from having fun other ways and
takes away human interaction.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
This lesson connects with the local community by teaching student’s lessons about life.
The theme of this text is about how watching TV too much can take away from other fun
activities. Students can also learn lessons about friendships, never giving up, or how hard
work pays off. Students can also use local artwork to interpret theme, or songs that
communicate larger messages through lyrics.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional challenge during this
lesson (enrichment)?
For students who need additional challenge, I will allow them the option to complete their
work individually and/or allow them to illustrate an image or comic based on the theme
of the text. I will also have them choose a fiction novel from the classroom library and
determine the theme of that text.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional language support?
Students that need additional language support will be provided a dictionary to define
unknown words in the text. If applicable, students will be given index cards with
examples of theme in both English and their native language. Teacher will also collaborate
with school ESE specialists if needed.
