General Description
The 0.2 kW Protective Relaying Training System is a complete program that extends training in protective
relaying beyond the operation and calibrations of individual relays into broader circuit applications. The
program provides hands-on training at the system level in Generator Protection, Transformer Protection, and
Induction Motor Protection.
The 0.2 kW Protective Relaying Training System consists of several modules, which can be divided into five
groups: Common Electrical Modules, Power System Modules (Series 3700), Protective Relaying Control Station,
Protective Relays (Series 3800), and Additional and Optional Equipment. These modules are described in detail
below:
Common Electrical Modules – Power supply, synchronous generator, induction motor, prime mover /
dynamometer, resistive loads, voltmeters, ammeters, and others. Most of these modules are part of the 0.2 kW
ElectroMechanical System (EMS), Model 8001 or 8006.
Power System Modules, Series 3700 – Modules specially designed for training in the protective relaying area,
including current transformers, voltage transformers, power transformers, source impedances, a transmission
grid, and others. These modules are designed to be installed in an EMS workstation.
Protective Relaying Control Station – A mobile rack for protective relay operation, including a dc power supply,
dc control relays for system studies, and an interconnection panel to facilitate connection of the protective
relays to the system to be protected.
Protective Relays, Series 3800 – Selection of protective relays. Each relay is mounted on a metal panel which
facilitates relay installation in the Protective Relaying Control Station. Each relay panel is equipped with fault
switches that allow fault insertion for troubleshooting at the system level. The following types of protective
relays are available: undercurrent/overcurrent, undervoltage/overvoltage, synchronism check,
underfrequency/over-frequency, phase balance, phase sequence, reverse power, and power factor.
Additional and Optional Equipment – Various modules, such as distribution busses, a ring bus, transmission
lines, distribution transformers, protective relays, and reactive loads are available. These modules can be
added to the basic 0.2 kW Protective Relaying Training System to allow the instructor to create more elaborate
hands-on exercises.
The 0.2 kW Protective Relaying Training System courseware consists of a student manual and an instructor
guide. The student manual is divided into several units, each consisting of a series of hands-on exercises
dealing with one of the fields of protective relaying mentioned above. Each exercise provides a clearly stated
objective, a discussion, textbook references, a summary of the exercise procedure, a detailed exercise
procedure, a conclusion, and a set of review questions. A ten-question test at the end of each unit allows the
student to verify what was learned in the unit. Completion of some exercises in the student manual requires a
digital storage oscilloscope and a digital multimeter, which must be purchased separately.

The instructor guide contains the practical results as well as the answers for each hands-on exercise in the
student manual. It also contains the answers to the unit test questions in the student manual. The reference
textbook provides more elaborate discussions of the theory presented in the student manual.
The prerequisites for the 0.2 kW Protective Relaying Training System include: completion of a course in relay
operation and calibration, and completion of a course in electric power technology that covers electric power
generation, power transformers, and induction motors.
The modular structure of the 0.2 kW Protective Relaying Training System, together with the subdivision of
student manuals into topical units, enables instructors to choose equipment that matches their budgets while
progressively enhancing their systems over time.
For power utility users, it is possible to combine their own protective relays with a selection of modules from the
0.2 kW Protective Relaying Training System to obtain equipment setups that correspond to existing one-line
and three-line diagrams.

Protective Relaying Control Station

3806-40
The Protective Relaying Control
Station is a standard 48 cm (19 in)
rack, mounted on castors, that forms
the basis of a typical protective
relaying control station. Two sets of dc
control relays, a dc power supply, and
an interconnection panel are mounted
on the rack.
The two sets of dc control relays (six
relays per set) allow basic contacts of
protective relays (either normally open
or normally closed contacts) to be
converted into multiple normally open
(NO) / normally closed (NC) contacts
to actuate ac circuit breakers
(contactors) in the electrical power
system. Two of the dc control relays
have adjustable time delay. The dc
power supply is used to energize the relay coils.
The interconnection panel consists of three sets of twelve 4 mm safety banana jacks mounted on a standard 48
cm (19 in) panel. Three multiple contact connectors, also mounted on the panel, allow connection of cables
from the Interconnection Module, Model 3787.
A set of metal rails and three standard 48 cm (19 in) blank panels are supplied with the Protective Relaying
Control Station. The metal rails are used to mount the protective relays in the control station. Customers can
use the three blank panels for mounting their own protective relays in the control station.

Synchro-Check Relay
3820-10
The Synchro-Check Relay checks the
synchronism between two
independent ac power sources (a
synchronous generator and an ac
power bus, for instance) and indicates
when the two sources are
synchronized (within predetermined
limits). This relay can be used to
control the interconnection of two ac
power sources to prevent damages or
disturbances in power systems. A

Phase Balance/Sequence Relay

3822-10
The Phase Balance/Sequence Relay is
sensitive to phase unbalance, phase
reversal, and phase loss in three-
phase power systems. It can be used
to initiate an action should any one of
the hazards mentioned above occur.
For instance, the sensitivity to phase
unbalance allows protection of a
three-phase induction motor against
excessive temperature rise due to
unbalanced supply voltages.
Unbalance setpoint and time delay
adjustments as well as two sets of
contacts are provided. The adjustable time delay is a useful feature which can prevent premature relay
operation on short duration supply fluctuations.

Reverse Power Relay

3824-20
The Reverse Power Relay is sensitive
to the reversal of active power in
single-phase and three-phase four-
wire power systems. In systems where
a generator is connected in parallel to
other generators or to a power system
bus, this relay can be used to prevent
the generator from motoring in the
event the driving force applied to that
generator fails. Reverse power
setpoint and time delay adjustments

Motor Power-Factor Relay

3825-10
The Motor Power-Factor Relay is a
protective relay that is sensitive to
power factor. Because the phase angle
between the motor current and
voltage, and thus, the power factor, is
dependent on the mechanical load
applied to the motor, this relay can be
used to detect either underload or
overload conditions for a three-phase
induction motor. Power factor setpoint
and start delay adjustments, and an
underload/overload selection switch
are provided along with a single set of
contacts. The adjustable start delay is a useful feature which prevents the relay from tripping while the motor is
starting.

The Resistive Load consists of a
module housing nine wire-wound
power resistors arranged in three
identical banks. Each bank consists of
three resistors connected in parallel
that can be switched on or off with
toggle switches to obtain various
resistance values. This allows the total
(equivalent) resistance of each bank to
be increased or decreased by steps.
Six safety banana jacks on the module front panel provide access to each resistor bank. The three resistor
banks can be connected separately for operation in three-phase circuits. Also, the three resistor banks can be
connected together for operation in single-phase circuits.

Synchronizing Module
8621-00
The Synchronizing Module is a power
control device enclosed in a half-size
EMS module. The Synchronizing
Module is mainly used to synchronize
two ac generators. It can also be used
to determine the phase sequence in
three-phase circuits. The
synchronizing Module has three
indicator lamps indicating the relative
voltage difference between two
circuits. The brightness of the
indicator lamps increases with the voltage difference between the two circuits. The Synchronizing Module has a
three-phase switch mounted on the module front panel. This three-phase switch is a triple-pole, single-throw
switch. Each phase leg of the three-phase switch is protected against overcurrents and short-circuits by a
thermal-magnetic circuit breaker.

8821-20
The Power Supply is enclosed in a full-
size EMS module. It can be used to
power most of the EMS modules of the
Electricity and New Energy Training
Equipment. This Power Supply
provides dc power and ac power, both
fixed and variable, single-phase and
three-phase. Color-coded safety
banana jacks provide access to all the
power sources in the Power Supply. All
these power sources can be used
simultaneously, provided that the total
current drawn does not exceed the
maximum current rating. A built-in voltmeter with selector switch and liquid crystal display (LCD) indicates the
voltage provided by any of the power sources. The input and outputs of the Power Supply are protected by
independent circuit breakers.

The Power Supply cannot supply all the amounts of current indicated by the current ratings on its front panel at
the same time. The current indicated for the fixed ac three-phase output section can only be obtained if no current
is drawn from any other section, because this section is protected by the main circuit breaker common to every
section. If currents flow in other sections, the available current for the fixed ac three-phase output section
*Note decreases. The variable ac output section and the variable dc output section are protected by a common set of
circuit breakers placed after the fixed ac three-phase output section, which means that the current capacity has to
be shared between the two sections. For instance, if current of the variable dc output section is at 70% of its
nominal value, current drawn from the variable ac output section should not exceed 30% of its nominal value. The
fixed dc output section is also protected by circuit breakers placed after the fixed ac three-phase output section.

Power Diodes
8842-10
The Power Diodes consists of six
power diodes mounted in a half-size
EMS enclosure. Each individual diode
is protected against overcurrent and
short-circuits by a thermal-magnetic
circuit breaker. All the anodes and
cathodes of the diode are terminated
on the front panel by color-coded, 4
mm safety banana jacks. The diodes
are interconnected in three groups of
two, i.e., one group for each phase of
the power supply. To reduce the number of external connections on the front panel, the upper cathodes can be
connected together as well as the lower anodes, through the use of a toggle switch.

Four-Quadrant Dynamometer/Power Supply

8960-B0
The Four-Quadrant Dynamometer/
Power Supply is a highly versatile USB
peripheral designed to be used in the
Electric Power Technology Training
Systems. Two operating modes are
available: Dynamometer and Power
Supply. A wide variety of user-
selectable functions is available in
each operating mode.
In the Dynamometer mode, the unit
becomes a four-quadrant
dynamometer that can act as either a
fully configurable brake (i.e., a
mechanical load) or a fully configurable prime mover (i.e., a motor drive). In the Power Supply mode, the unit
becomes a four-quadrant power supply that can act as a dc voltage source, dc current source, ac power source,
etc.
In each operating mode, key parameters related to the selected function are displayed. Speed, torque,
mechanical power, and energy are displayed in the Dynamometer mode while voltage, current, electrical power,
and energy are displayed in the Power Supply mode. Optional functions, such as a small wind-turbine emulator,
a hydraulic turbine emulator, a solar panel emulator, battery chargers, an SDK (Software Development Kit) etc.,
can be added to the standard functions to further enhance the training possibilities of the Four-Quadrant
Dynamometer/Power Supply.
Two modes are available to control the function which the Four-Quadrant Dynamometer/Power Supply
performs: Manual and Computer-Based.
In the Manual control mode, the module operates as a stand-alone unit, and the function performed is selected,
set, and monitored using front-panel mounted controls and display. This mode provides access to all basic
functions. In the Computer-Based control mode, the function performed by the module is selected, set, and
monitored using the LVDAC-EMS software. In this mode, communication between the Four-Quadrant
Dynamometer/Power Supply and the host computer running the LVDAC-EMS software is achieved through a
USB connection. This mode provides access to all basic functions, as well as to additional advanced functions.

Alternatively, this workstation can be
mounted on either a Mobile Storage
Cabinet, Model 89117-1, to make a
Mobile Workstation, Model 8110-2, or
on a Mobile Base, Model 88863, to
make a mobile workstation without
storage cabinet. In that case, it is
possible to mount and lock a second
Workstation, Model 8134-2, on top of the first Workstation to double the space available for EMS modules.
The Workstation consists of three rows of compartments designed to house EMS modules. Two of these rows
have full-height compartments while the other row has half-height compartments. Each row of full-height
compartments can accommodate up to three full-size EMS modules or six half-size EMS modules whereas the
row of half-height compartments can accommodate up to three half-size EMS modules.

Module Installation
The EMS modules are guided into position along stainless steel guide rails. Separators between each bay of the
workstation ensure perfect alignment of the EMS modules and allow their easy insertion in the workstation. A
holding mechanism ensures that each EMS module stays in place once it is installed in a compartment of the
workstation. Front-mounted push levers allow all EMS modules on a single row to be released for easy removal.

Safety Padlock Bars

Two safety padlock bars on the front of the workstation prevent students from removing EMS modules during
laboratory exercises. The bars can be removed and locked to the side of the workstation when the safety lock is
not necessary.

Additional Information
Six holes in the rear panel of the workstation allow connection to a power supply, as well as the connection of 2
kW machines to their interconnection modules. Assembly of the workstation before painting ensures that each
EMS module in the workstation is correctly grounded.

Inductive Load (Optional)

8321-00
The Inductive Load consists of a
module housing nine iron-core power
inductors arranged in three identical
banks. Each bank consists of three
inductors connected in parallel that
can be switched on or off with toggle
switches to obtain various inductance
values. This allows the equivalent
inductance of each bank to be
increased or decreased by steps. Six
safety banana jacks on the module front panel provide access to each inductor bank. The three inductor banks
can be connected separately for operation in three-phase circuits. Also, the three inductor banks can be
connected together for operation in single-phase circuits.
The Inductive Load is commonly used in conjunction with other basic load modules, like the Resistive Load and
the Capacitive Load to experiment with the effects of different types of load on a circuit.

Three-Phase Transmission Line (Optional)

8329-00
The Three-Phase Transmission Line
consists of three iron-core inductors
enclosed in a half-size EMS module.
The inductors are specifically designed
to simulate a high-voltage ac
transmission line. The line impedance
can be adjusted to four different
values using a selector switch
mounted on the front panel. A three-
pole switch is used to induce
transients by momentarily interrupting the power flow. Both sides (sender and receiver) of the Three-Phase
Transmission Line are terminated on the front panel by 4 mm color-coded safety banana jacks.
