Boating
Need a lift?
A
nyone who has driven
a boat on Lake of the
Ozarks knows it can
be challenging. Large
wakes, debris, other
boaters … there’s a lot to watch out
for if you are in the captain’s seat.
But what if you want to turn the keys
over and let someone else drive? Or
if you’ve purchased a boat and don’t
quite feel comfortable enough to get
behind the wheel? You are not alone.
There are an estimated 180,000 boats
on Lake of the Ozarks — and every-
one has a different level of experience
driving a boat.
Lake of the Ozarks has had the repu-
tation as being one the most dangerous
waterways in the country. The Lake
of the Ozarks Captains Association
hopes to fix that by making it easy for
recreational boaters to hire a licensed
captain. The demand for licensed boat
captains on Lake of the Ozarks has
increased over the years. Whether
someone wants to hire a sober driver
for the day, or needs help learning the
ropes of their newly-purchased boat,
they can help.
LAKENEWSONLINE.COM 21
Captains Bob May and Doug Beck
have been a part of the association
since the beginning. They also work in
conjunction with the Lake of the Ozarks
Water Safety Council, the United States
Coast Guard, and the Missouri State
Highway Patrol Water Patrol Division.
“The LOTOCA seeks to promote
boating and water safety, education and
good fellowship between operations and
these agencies,” Doug said. “We want
to provide the public a resource to find
qualified USCG credentialed captains
that will provide them with a safe, fun
experience.”

HEALTHY

S
ummer is the season of free-

and no school, routines tend
to relax. Just don’t take a
break from good health.
“The break in routine can
mean more opportunity to do nothing, espe-
cially for kids,” says Virginia Nagy, M.D., a
family medicine provider at Lake Regional
Clinic – Lake Ozark. “It’s also a tempting
time to eat a lot of junk, whether snacking at
home, on road trips or at fairs and ballparks.
On the positive side, it’s easier to get out and
be active in the summer. It’s up to you to
make the most of this season.”
Following are seven habits for adults and
kids to get into this summer.
2 Use sunscreen. While out enjoying “If you don’t like drinking plain water, problems and

video games and phone time might
sound perfect to kids, but it’s not
healthy.

spend as much of their
free time at Lake of the
Ozarks as they can. So
when it came time to pick a venue to
have their wedding, they knew exactly
where to go.
Lake of the Ozarks was also the spot
where Geno proposed over Memorial
Day weekend in 2016.
“We were headed out to enjoy what
I thought was a typical day on the
Lake,” Michelle recounts. “He made
the boat suddenly stop, acting like it
wouldn’t restart at the 2-mile marker
of the Grand Glaize Arm. He opened the
engine hatch, mentioning that he found
the problem, and pulled out the ring.”
Needless to say they made it back
home from their boat ride a newly-
engaged couple.
The wedding was held May 6, 2017, at
the Stone’s Mansion in Osage Beach.
“We wanted our wedding weekend
to be on the Lake, and have everyone be
able to stay at the venue and our Lake
house to maximize our time together
with family and friends,” Michelle said.

“The ceremony on the
turret of Stone’s Man-
sion with perfect weather
and an amazing view of the
Lake with all of our friends and
family celebrating with us (was
the most memorable part of the day).”
Michelle says they always have fun as a
couple whether it is going to a St. Louis Cardi-
nals game or relaxing at home.
Michelle and Geno both grew up in Collins-
ville, Ill., so they knew each other from grade
school but became better friends while taking
the same engineering class at a junior college.
Over the years their paths kept crossing and
eventually they became a couple.
They plan to take a honeymoon adventure
touring California sites and road tripping down
the Pacific Coast Highway.
The couple lives in their hometown where
Michelle is an area engineer for the Missouri
Department of Transportation. Geno is the
maintenance director for Peterson Healthcare
for Collinsville Rehab & Healthcare in the St.
Louis area. He also owns a lawn care business.
Chef Jim and the Baba’s team provided three meals over the weekend. Michelle says all of their guests are still raving about the food.
