From the August 1996 “Shorinji Kenpo Primary Curriculum” handbook.

Here are some basic approximate sounds. All おばさん o-ba-sa-n "aunt" (short)
sounds are short in Japanese unless indicated おばあさん o-ba-a-sa-n "grandmother" (long)
otherwise. Imagine you have been 'cut-off' from こい ko-i "love" (short)
what you were going to say. Ex. car, ca-, a- .
こうい ko-o-i "behavior" (long)
You will have to listen to different native speakers
carefully to get a good feel as to how things are 'Double consonants' (pp, kk, ss, ssh, tt, tch)
really pronounced. represent a small っ (tsu) that creates a slight
A (ä) car, father pause or hesitation, if you will.
I (e) even, meet もと moto "base"
U (oo, oo)cook, book; tool, troop
もっと motto "more" (mo- to)
E (e) pen, ten, let
O (ô) born いた ita "existed"
いった itta "said" (i- ta)
FU (foo) fool; who- いち ichi "one"
いっち itchi "agreement" (i- chi)
As for the "R" (RA, RI, RU, RE, RO) sound, we
don't have their sound and they don't have our "R" Accent: Japanese has a pitch system (not stress
(are, rrr...) sound. The CDN/USA one, that is. accent as in English) based upon high and low
り(RI) is somewhere between a "DI-" and "RI-" pitch. These apparently occur with respect to
(short vowel) sound. In fact "R" & "L" sounds are syllables. There are various types of pitch patterns
the most difficult for Japanese people to say but these are basic:
because these sounds don't exist in Japanese.
あおい aoi "blue" (high in middle)
In Japanese, long 'vowel' sounds are written. So きょうと kyo oto "Kyoto" (high initially)
don't make a long 'vowel' sound unless it is written. とうきょう to o kyo o "Tokyo" (low initially)
"And so it was written..." Romaji lettering in my
notes show long sounds with a line over top Pitch pattern could vary depending on where it
( Ō,Ū ). Here are some examples of differences occurs. Ex. da i ga ku "university" in
between long and short 'vowel' sounds. Double combination with another word,
'vowels' (aa, ii, ee, oo, uu) create an elongated to o kyo o da i ga ku "Tokyo University", will
sound and in many instances different meanings: change the pitch pattern.
あ か さ た な は ま や ら わ ん が ざ だ ば ぱ

い き し ち に ひ み り ぎ じ ぢ び ぴ
I ki shi chi ni hi mi ri gi ji ji bi pi
う く す つ ぬ ふ む ゆ る ぐ ず づ ぶ ぷ
u ku su tsu nu fu mu yu ru gu zu zu bu pu
え け せ て ね へ め れ げ ぜ で べ ぺ

お こ そ と の ほ も よ ろ お ご ぞ ど ぼ ぽ
