Problems:
1) Two small spheres spaced 0.2m apart and have equal charge. How
many excess electrons must be present on each sphere if the
magnitude of the force of repulsion between them is
4.57 x 10−21 N? (10 points.)
2) A negative charge -500µC exerts an upward 0.200N force on an
unknown charge 0.300m directly below it. (a) What is the unknown
charge (magnitude and sign)? (b)What are the magnitude and
direction of the force that are unknown charge exerts on the -500µC
charge? (10 points.)
3) We have a system of two point charges (𝑞1 = −𝑞 , 𝑞2 = −4𝑞) are
separated by a distance r. We would like to find a third charge 𝑞3
with the right sign and magnitude, and place on a right position.
Find a third point charge 𝑞3 with a appropriate location,
sing/nagnitude such that it will put the system into equilibrium. (20
points.)
4) Note: The forces between 𝑞1 and 𝑞2 are repulsive. You should find
a third charge that would be attractive force with both 𝑞1 and 𝑞2 .
Equilibrium conditions require no net force (𝐹𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 0). (10 points.)
5) A positive charge 𝑞1 = +𝑞 is located a distance d along the y-axis
from the origin. A second positive charge 𝑞2 =+q is located at the
origin, and a negative charge 𝑞3 =-2q is located on the x-axis at a
distance 2d away from 𝑞1 . Calculate the net electrostatic force on
𝑞1 due to the other charges. (10 points.)
6) Two charges, one of 𝑞1 =+2.5µC and the other 𝑞2 = -3.5µC, 𝑞1 is
placed at the origin, and 𝑞2 is on the x-axis (x=0.6m). Find the
position on the x-axis where the net force on a small charge +q
would be zero. (10 points.)
7) Two point charges are separated by 25.0 cm. Find the net electric
field these charges produce at (a) point A and (b) point B (c) What
would be the magnitude and direction of the electric force this
combination of charges would produce on a proton at point A. (20
points.)
