Unit Summary
Learning Statement
Tell the story of how you made sense of the different concepts throughout this unit. Be sure to hit all of the following talking points, and

unit as evidence. Be sure to include one habit of a mathematician in each section.
1. How did you make sense of the distance and midpoint formulas. (Assignment: The Distance Formula)
2. How did you make sense of circle equations. (Assignment: Equation of a Circle, SAT/ACT Problems)
3. How did you make sense out of arc length and area of a segment and sector equations. (Assignment: Arc Length, Area of Sectors
and Segments, SAT/ACT Problems)
Circle equations were something I had
already encountered, along with other conic
sections, from studying for the SAT Math 2
Subject Test, so I was comfortable coming
into the unit. I thought deriving the equation
from the Pythagorean Theorem was fun
though, and helped me to see the
connection between the two algebraically
and geometrically, as well as to generalize.
I felt comfortable with arc length/area
coming in, but I had just learned the
equations. I found it illuminating to just think
of it as multiplying the total
area/circumference by the percentage of
the total circle’s area/circumference that the
sector is. For that, I had to take apart and
put back together in order to look at each
piece and figure out what they were doing.
