So you want to throw hard, YOU NEED TO THROW HARDER! I totally understand, I was sitting
right where you are today searching for anything to help me increase my velocity. It sucks! Every
time you get on that mound you are trying to throw the ball away from the hitter instead of right at
him. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was always trying to learn different pitches, so I wouldn't
get hit so hard. I was constantly changing my arm angle to get more movement on my ball, so I
wouldn't get hit so hard. I even pitched one game where I used a different arm angel every single
pitch, so I wouldn't get hit so hard. Not only did my arm kill me the next day but I had more walks
than strikeouts and when all this failed I went back to trying to throw the ball perfectly at the knees
or just off the plate, so I wouldn't get hit so hard. This worked until I would miss and leave it over the
plate and a rocket would shot past my head. This is when I lost it and was fed up with getting hit so
hard that I went insane.

I wanted to throw so hard, so bad, that when I would pitch, I would grunt and almost scream be-
cause I was wiping my arm so hard to the plate. I would literally swing my arm out of my glove, be-
hind my head and then pull it across my body to the plate as hard as I possibly could. It looked like
my arm was ripping off my body. Everyone who saw a picture of me pitching would cringe in pain. I
learned quickly that if you are trying to throw hard and you don't know what you are doing then dis-
aster is just around the corner. Disaster came when I was 18 years old and I had ruined my arm be-
cause of the combination of stupidity and an insane desire to throw harder. I had just signed a full
scholarship to a top level Junior College and was pitching in the opening day game. The moment
my rotator cuff tore was like out of a movie. I was hiding the pain with pain killers and I also had to
hit my arm in between innings so I would feel the pain of the punch instead of the pain coming from
my throbbing arm. It was the fourth inning and I was trying to win my first college game when some-
thing felt like it exploded in my shoulder. My arm completely went limp and I could not move it. My
heart was beating so fast that I thought I might pass out. I looked at my coached and said some-
thing was wrong. He brought in relief and I went to the doctor. I had torn my rotator cuff and needed
surgery immediately. After surgery and my rehabilitation, I was told by every single doctor that my
career was over. I would be able to throw again but never as hard as I was throwing before the in-
jury which was about 85 MPH. I was crushed and went into a serious depression.

You think the pain of getting hit around hard or walking the runners in during a big game is
tough, just image what it would feel like if a bunch of doctors told you that your career was over at
18 years old! It was devastating. I didn't understand why this was happening to me when all I was
trying to do was increase my velocity so I could compete at the high school and college level. This
was the biggest most significant moment of my life and what it taught me is what I want to give to
you here.
What if I told you that you could reach your velocity goals and throw the ball past hitters? What if
I told you that you only need one pitch to dominate in high school and college? What if I told you
that you could throw gas without having to worry about destroying your arm? What if I told you that
you could feel like Superman on the mound? What if I could give you the secrets to velocity TODAY

when I discovered them. I will never forget the day that I discovered the first velocity secret and

How much time to do you really think you have to reach your velocity goals and start accom-

screwed me over" or “If I only would have committed to 3X Pitching I would have reached my veloc-
ity goals.” I will tell you right now that regret will live with you for a long time. It is a very heavy, un-
easy feeling. This feeling is telling you that you failed because you didn't give it your best. I mean
who in their right mind can live with that? This is why you must take what I am about to give to you
seriously because these secrets and the 3X Pitching Velocity Program, mixed with some strong de-
termination, will give you everything you need to reach your velocity goals and make your hopes

SECRET #1: Triple Extension


I learned this secret from the Olympic lifting world. After the arm surgery, I wasn't getting any
better. I even had the same pain from before the surgery. When all of my doctors gave up on me I
went to work with the world famous sports trainer, Mackie Shilstone. I got to work with him and
some big leaguers at the same time. After six months with his program I still wasn't getting any bet-
ter, so he said "Sorry, it doesn't look good for you." This was another big blow to my confidence.
After this I ran into one of my high school football coaches who told me that his good friend is the

strength and conditioning coach for LSU and that he could get me in with him. I was excited be-
cause LSU was winning National Championships like clockwork. When I met Kurt Hester, the
strength and conditioning coach for LSU, I knew something was about to happen. After I told him my
situation he said to me that if I couldn't pitch then why not work to become the strongest guy on the
team and then let's see what happens. He was right, the stronger I got, the more my arm stopped
hurting and the harder I started throwing. The first thing he taught me about becoming an explosive
athlete was force production. He showed me how training your force production through triple exten-
sion made you a more powerful athlete. He left it up to me to figure out how this would transfer into
pitching velocity. The amazing thing was it transferred perfectly. Triple extension is the extension of
the ankle, knee and hip flexor. This is how athletes move in all directions with power. This is also
how pitchers build long and fast strides which is a determining factor in extreme velocity.

SECRET #2: Separation


When I learned this secret my arm finally stopped hurting. Separation along with triple extension
is the foundation of 3X Pitching. 3X Pitching is a revolutionary approach to pitching velocity that I
developed from these secrets and will tell you about in full detail at the end of this book. "Separa-
tion" is the separation of the back hip to back shoulder at front foot strike. The National Pitching As-
sociation has performed studies that has proven this component alone is responsible for 80% of
velocity but what they failed to understand that triple extension is the only way to generate optimal
hip to shoulder separation.

I also refer to this secret as Core Torque. This is because the opposite rotation of the hips to
shoulders build torque in the core muscles.This torque will allow your arm to stay relaxed until the

cocking phase of the throwing arm. This will prevent putting your throwing shoulder and elbow into
the “Red Zone.” This will also allow for more external rotation and forward trunk tilt which will lead to
earlier internal rotation. This is all key components of high velocity pitchers.

SECRET #3: The "Tilt"


When I think of this secret, the "tilt," I think of hard throwers like Tim Lincecum, Aroldis Chap-
man and Felix Hernandez. At front foot strike these guys look like the they are doing the limbo. Their
heads are over their butts and their hips are open towards the target. What the "Tilt" does is create
more hip to shoulder separation because it puts more gravitational force on the throwing shoulder at
front foot strike. This is why sidearm or submarine pitchers have lower velocities. They do not create
as much core torque as over the top pitchers because their weight at front foot strike is over their
belt buckle which is forcing their throwing shoulder to start early.

The most effective way to benefit from this secret is to make sure you use it to help you create
more hip to shoulder separation. This means it must also be used with triple extension.

SECRET #4: The Force Vector
This secret is the key to initiating explosive power through the stride phase. If I could grade
these extreme velocity secrets from 1 - 10, 10 being the highest, I would give this secret an 11.
When I learned about The Force Vector and its relationship to triple extension, I wanted to lock it
up and throw away the key, so only I would have this precious velocity gem. The problem was I am
a coach now and it is so vital to helping my pitchers gain velocity that I had to let it out. This secret
alone will completely change your delivery. It will convert you from a rock slinger into an elite rocket
launcher.

The Force Vector has to do with effectively building power as soon as possible in your pitching
delivery. Most lower velocity pitchers have a very hard time getting their momentum and speed
going early enough in the delivery. The more explosive we come off the rubber, the father we get off
the mound and the more that speed transfers into the velocity of the ball.

Unfortunately, I am not going to unlock the full details of this secret in this book. It is so impor-
tant that it deserves and entire chapter to itself. If you must learn more then I highly recommend you
read the last section of this book. It will tell you want to do from here!

SECRET #5: The 2 Phase Delivery


This secret will change how you think which will then change how you pitch. The pitching deliv-
ery is extremely intricate and to ultimately understand something you must break it down into its
simplest form. This means you must break it down to the point before it becomes unrecognizable.
You can point out several important components of the pitching delivery but in its simplest form you
can break pitching down into 2 phases. The first phase is called the Stride Phase and the second
phase is called the Throwing Phase. During the Stride Phase, which occurs before front foot

strike, you will notice that the arm is not doing much but getting into position for the next phase. In
the second phase or Throwing Phase, the arm is now the star of the show. It is launched into ac-
tion accelerating to the release of the pitch.

Most young pitchers have the mechanics that I had when I was young which prevented me
from throwing hard and ultimately putting me under the knife. If you can see the pitching delivery in
these two phases and understand that the arm is not active until the second phase this will put you
in a better position to learn the effectiveness of Triples Extension and Separation. If you could
make this mental adjustment today, you could potentially increase velocity overnight.

SECRET #6: Stride Length to Stride Speed


I am sure you have heard coaches yelling at you your entire career to stride out farther but the
secret here is that a long stride is only effective if you are able to accelerate the speed of your body
through it. These two factors together are the essence of velocity. The longer you can build your
stride, with the ability to fly through it, determines your dominance on the mound. This is because it
will not only increase velocity but it will get you closer to the plate. New technology in the game
today is uncovering this secret by calculating distance into the velocity of the pitch. They are finding
that pitchers who release the ball closer to the plate have the potential to throw harder than those
with shorter strides.

SECRET #7: Strength to Weight Ratio
The secret here is that most low velocity pitchers can't lift their own body weight. How do they
expect to throw hard when they can't even jump over a chair. You vertical is a good determinate of
your body's ability to generate power in an explosive manner. How are you going to increase your
stride length and stride speed with Triple Extension if you cannot even triple extend fast enough to
move your body off the ground? I see this problem almost every day with my newbie's. They come
to me wanting to throw harder and then I tell them to jump as high as they can off the ground while I
measure their vertical. You should see the look of embarrassment on their faces when they can
barely get off the ground. This means that their strength to weight ratio is very low. You should be
able to lift 10% more off your body weight in an explosive manner. I don't just mean picking it up off
the ground. I mean throwing it up off the ground like with the Olympic cleans. This shows me that
you have explosive power in your body. I just then need to teach you how to convert it to velocity,
which is the easy part!

SECRET #8: Second Clean


This is another highly kept secret of velocity. Dr. Garhammar has been studying the Olympic lifts
for years because of their ability to effectively enhance force production in athletes. His studies have
shown that the Second Clean or the Hang Clean is by far the most effective lift in training the ath-
lete to generate more power. It is so effective in doing this that no other lift or exercise even comes
close. The reason this secret is highly kept is because performing this lift is as intricate as perform-
ing explosive pitching mechanics. You must spend as much time learning the mechanics of this lift
as you spend with your pitching delivery.

The Second Clean along with all of the Olympic lifts push the limits of the athlete better than any
other lift in the weight room. This means if you do not perform these lifts correctly then you can be at
risk of injury. Especially, if you are using your arms to perform these lifts. All of the Olympic lifts use
very little arm action. They are mainly legs and core dominate lifts. Make sure you learn these lifts
correctly before pushing your weight percentages.

This secret and the other Olympic lifts are a critical part of the 3X Pitching Velocity Program
which you will learn about at the end of this book.

SECRET #9: Heavy Load Training


This secret is almost forbid in the game of baseball. Most would say it is not a secret but it is.
When you see how fast your velocity increases through this style of training you will wonder why no
one told you how effective heavy load training was to increasing velocity. Many of these secrets
exist because the majority of the population is uneducated therefore unaware of its effectiveness.

Heavy Load Training is only effective if it comes with the knowledge of how to train the athlete
specific to his sport and position. This means using heavy load training to enhance the performance
of a pitchers ability to build a long stride and to move through that stride with explosive power would
be of great benefit to his velocity. If on the other hand you used heavy load training to enhance the
performance of a pitchers ability to curl weight up with his arm would be of very little benefit to his
velocity. Heavy load training is not as excepted in baseball because most coaches believe that the
arm is what generates velocity and doing leg curls or arm curls isn’t going to help you wipe your arm
faster. If these coaches had an understanding of total body mechanics like with 3X Pitching then
heavy load training would make since. This is why trying to convince your coach that you want to
use heavy load training when they believe the arm is mainly responsible for generating velocity is a
loosing battle.

Heavy Load Training is high risk training if not performed properly. This means you must have
the knowledge of what lifts to use and how to perform them correctly to lower the risk.

SECRET #10: Anaerobic Conditioning


This last secret hits hard with pitching coaches across the country. This is because the "Old-
School" approach to training the pitcher was that pitching is an endurance position so we must run
long distances to help build their endurance. This means they used aerobic training to train the
pitchers endurance. To understand this secret best you need to know the difference between Aero-
bic and Anaerobic training. Aerobic means with oxygen and Anaerobic means without. To prove that
pitchers are anaerobic machines all you need to do is read and learn about ATP. ATP is what fuels
the muscles and there are three phases to ATP production. Long distance runners use mainly the
last production of ATP called Aerobic respiration. This production of ATP occurs when the athlete
has been performing the same movement without rest for at least 90 seconds. This would tell you
that pitchers do not train in this phase of ATP. The demands of pitching include an action of throwing
the ball which takes about a second to perform and then the pitcher is at rest again. This means the
pitcher uses mainly the first phase of ATP which is called the The Phosphagen System. To take
advantage of this knowledge a pitcher will benefit from a training program that is helping to increase
the buffer of ATP during this phase of production.
