What decisions need to be made when an individual discovers that he/she is working in a

company and industry with many ethical issues?

Acme was fraught with different kinds of unethical practices. Acme’s home office seemed to

be fraught with ethical issues related to employees, conflict redressal, personal gains and

conflict of interests.

There seemed to be money laundering and spill offs from the local offices. There were

inappropriate personal relationships too. P Joe discovered al this while working for Acme.

When an individual discovers that there are ethical issues with regard to the workplace

environment the first thing he needs to do is escalate the same to his immediate officer. If the

officer turns a blind eye or pointedly shows indifference he could always request a hearing

before the senior management. The senior management who are responsible for designing the

ethical code of conduct within the organization needs to know about the ethical misconduct

that occurs in the floor of Acme. Unless they are aware of the same corrective steps cannot

be taken. So Joe can assume the role of the whistle blower and bring this to the notice of the

management.

The other thing that Joe needs to consider is his own personal reflection on how he should

look at the workplace. If he feels that the workplace does not function in a manner that is fair

and judicious he can leave. Knowing the difficulties that Joe has ,it is recommended that Joe

looks at speaking to an ethics officer about the happenings or confront the managers about

the issues. If Joe does this he can be at least free from the guilt of being a party to the

misdemeanors.
2. If the organizational culture at Acme Title Pawn cannot be changed, can Joe continue to

work there and avoid involvement in activities that are ethically questionable or possibly

illegal?

If the organizational culture does not change it means that ethics has no place in the culture

of the firm. Joe’ s work is not an isolated one where he can work independently of others .he

has ot work with others and definitely he would be a part of the unethical work culture of

others though he may not directly be involved in any unethical deeds . so Joe has ot make a

clear decision should he work in Acme ignoring the ill happenings or should he quit. Hid

decision should be based on what is most important to him and his priority. It is

recommended that Joe speak to the management and help in drafting a code of ethics

otherwise he leave the job though jobs may be difficult to find. At least Joe will have a clear

conscience.

2. How could Acme create an ethical organizational culture and still be in the title pawn

business?

The Code of Business Conduct and Ethics of generally set for the legal and ethical standards

of conduct for directors, officers and the employees. This Code is said to be intended to deter

the wrong doing in accordance with the high standards of integrity in order to promote the

conduct of all business company in compliance with the applicable laws and regulations

The pawn business has certain ethical code of conduct in business dealings. This should be

the guide for Acme to write up policies that enable the firm to be a good citizen.
Ethics is considered to be a set of standards drawn up by people who felt that there were

certain ways in which people ought to conduct themselves based on traditional value

systems. These ethical codes were set up in a dialectical environment where it was widely

debated and then prescribed to be ethical. Ethics is seen to be as a person’s values and also as

moral principles in every area of life. Being ethical means conforming to moral standards

which is being applied and accepted to the work environment
