THE PROPOSED PROJECT

A 4-storey office building is to be designed using steel components. Based on the layout
drawings, you are required to provide a complete structural design of the building. The
design report should cover:
1. Brief descriptions of the proposed project explaining the introduction, the
function of the building, types of flooring, material properties of the steel,
loadings considered in the design, types of connection used and types of lateral
stability system provided
2. Analysis and design of beams, columns and connections
3. Analysis and design of roof truss
4. Design proposal for the lateral stability system against lateral forces
5. AutoCad drawings for the floor layout, building profile, beams, columns,
connections and roof trusses.

The design project must be based on Simple Design Method that leads to Simple
Construction. The dimensions of the floor layout and steel section sizes given in the
drawing can be used as a guide and you may change the section sizes to suit your design
proposal.

DESIGN DATA

STEEL GRADE
Steel Grade S275 for beams
Steel grade S275 for columns
Black bolt grade 8.8

FUNCTION OF BUILDING
Office building

CONNECTION TYPE
Pinned connection between beam-to-column
Pinned connection between secondary beam-to-main beam

CONSTRUCTION TYPE
Simple construction

STABILITY SYSTEM
Core wall or Steel bracing system

FLOOR SYSTEM
Hollow core slab with cast in-situ concrete topping
Page 3/4

Floor system consists of hollow core slab, steel mesh and 65mm concrete topping. The
shear studs and cast-in-situ concrete topping provide full lateral restraint along the
beam span. Except some beams near atrium may not have enough lateral restaint and
need to be designed as unrestrained.
