Field Laboratory 3 - Administration Page

Duration
3 Hours
Scope Statement
Field laboratories are designed to give participants an opportunity to observe and
perform under conditions that more closely approximate the real-world environment. In
this module, participants will view research mannequins in simulated office settings on
the range (building constructed for the demonstration, office furnishings, and research
mannequins). Small explosive devices—letter and briefcase bombs—will be detonated
in those settings. Participants will then be able to view the impact of the explosives on
the scene, including damage done to the mannequins. In addition, participants will
observe the detonation of a large-scale vehicle bomb located adjacent to a wooden
structure. After the detonation, they will observe close hand the extensive damage to
both the vehicle and the structure.
Terminal Learning Objectives (TLO)
At the conclusion of this field laboratory, participants will be able to recognize
components of an IED, describe the physical effects and associated dangers of an IED
detonation, and explain appropriate methods that first responders should employ in
order to protect and preserve evidence at a bombing incident.
Enabling Learning Objectives (ELO)
F3-1 Describe injuries typically caused by small explosive devices detonated in
close proximity to human survivors.

F3-2 Describe the effects of IED and large-scale vehicle explosions on wood
and concrete structures.

F3-3 Describe dangers associated with emergency response to an explosion or

incendiary incident near or within a structure.

F3-4 Recognize IEDs containing common fertilizers

F3-5 Describe the effects on large-scale explosions involving common

fertilizers.

F3-6 Recognize materials potentially hazardous to first responders and others

at a post-blast incident scene.

F3-7 Visually identify components that suggest the use of a bomb at a

suspected terrorist incident.

F3-8 Employ appropriate methods for the protection and preservation of

evidence at a bombing scene.

F3-9 Explain how the actions of the first responders can influence the quality of
a criminal investigation at a bombing scene.
