Your gift to the ACTS is still needed! Thank you to all who have responded
to the needs of our Church in northeastern Kansas through the 2018 appeal. One person or
parish could not possibly accomplish all that needs to be done for over 40 ministries and
services of the Archbishop’s Call to Share. You are being CALLED TO SHARE! To date, St.
Joseph has collected only $8,060 of our $12,805 goal Please return your pledge card in the
collection or by mail SOON! Thanks!

If you are looking for daycare this summer, please contact Sacred Heart in Emporia, as they
have a few openings.

The third and fourth grade class would like to invite the parish to participate in the final
service project of the year. We will be participating in the backpack food program for
students during the Lenten season. Your donations can be placed in the backpacks in
the back of church. The program is in need of the following items; boxed macaroni and
cheese, fruit cups, chicken and tuna packets, pop tarts, ramen noodles, canned Vienna
sausages, canned ravioli, canned spaghetti O's, and single serving shelf stable milk.
Thank you for helping us help those who are hungry.

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT REFLECTION

Is your FAITH forming your POLITICS?
Our fundamental Catholic belief in the innate dignity of the human person stems from God’s
revelation: humans, despite our best efforts to cover it up with our sins, are made in his
image.

Christ’s revelation of the Trinity tells us more about this image. From the revelation of God’s
triune nature we come to learn an important thing about ourselves: we humans are made to
be in community. We are, by nature, political animals! Because we find our good by being
with others, we each have a personal sense of how to best achieve the common good, our
politics. Perhaps this is why politics make us so passionate. Politics speaks to the core of
what it means to be human, just as much as our sexuality speaks to our core. It is only by
understanding God’s plan for both that we flourish as humans.

The Social Teachings of the Church are a kind of political morality. Just as sexual morality
keeps us from all kinds of troubles and best enables us to be emotionally fulfilled humans, so
does political morality keep us from social harms and helps us to prosper in community.
When we strive to keep all of our politics in harmony with the sum total of Catholic social
teaching, we work for justice. But when we break with that teaching, even in some small way,
we open the door for corruption.

This Lent, ask this question and give your Faith priority. “IS MY FAITH FORMING MY
POLITICS OR ARE MY POLITICS FORMING MY FAITH?” It is only our willingness to trust in
God’s revelation of our destiny through Jesus Christ and his Church that we can achieve the
best possible lives here and then put them aside for something even better in the hereafter.
SPECIAL THANKS TO all who attended the Fish Fry last Friday and then to all who attended the VERY SPECIAL
PRESENTATION by Sebastian D’Amico on Saturday. Sebastian was such an inspirational speaker; and we feel
very fortunate that he could “fit us in” to his busy schedule. We are hoping we can see/hear more of him again
soon!
