recommendation of SBC & type of foundation as per IS: 6403-1981,

8009(Part-I) 1976, 1080-1980, 2950-1981.

Accordingly, five bore holes with standard penetration test

(SPT) were performed at the proposed locations. Soil samples were
collected for further testing in the laboratory.

3.0 FIELD INVESTIGATION

3.1 Boring
Five bore holes (i.e. BH-1 to BH-5) were made at the location
suggested by Engineer Incharge. Boring was made by power driven rig up
to the maximum depth of exploration i.e. 18.00m, 19.50m, 19.00m, 20.00m
& 19.00m at BH-01, BH-02, BH-03, BH-04 & BH-05 respectively. The
soil/rock samples were collected as required for laboratory testing.

3.2 Standard Penetration Test (SPT)

Standard penetration tests (SPT) were conducted in the bore
holes as per IS 2131-1981. The numbers of blows for first 15 cm
penetration are considered as seating drive and are not taken into account.
The number of blows required for last 30 cm penetration is taken as SPT
number (“N” values). If number of blows for last 30 cm penetration
exceeds 100, it is said to be the refusal. SPT Test was conducted at regular
interval of 1 .5m. Tests results are shown in Table: 1-5.

3.3 Water Table

The ground water table was observed at the depth of 2.50m at
the time of investigation (i.e. July’ 2017).

5.2 Swelling Characteristics

The results of free swell tests reveal that the soil at the site is
found to be Low expansive in nature.

6.0 FOUNDATION ANALYSIS

For a satisfactory performance of the foundation, following
criteria must be satisfied:

4
ISO 9001:2008 Quality Certified Lab.
PNT

(i) The foundation must be safe against shear failure.

(ii) The foundation must not undergo excessive settlement.
The smaller of the bearing pressures obtained according to (i)
and (ii) above is adopted as the allowable bearing pressure.

For the foundation resting on Soil, a permissible total

settlement of 50 mm for a foundation resting on sand and 75 mm for a
foundation resting on clay is specified in IS: 1904-1978.

For foundation resting on Rock, a permissible total settlement

of 12mm for a foundation resting on rock is specified IS: 13063-1991.

6.1 For the Structures Resting on Rocky Strata

The bearing pressure of rocky strata is determined by various
methods suggested as per IS: 12070-1987. The methods are described as
below:
6.1.1 Based on Rock Classification:
The net safe bearing pressure based on classification of
the rock is tabulated below as per IS: 12070-1987.

TABLE-A :NET SAFE BEARING PRESSURE (qns) BASED

ON CLASSIFICATION
Material qns (t/m²)

Foliated rocks such as schist or slate in sound condition 400
Bedded limestone in sound condition 400
Sedimentary rock, including hard shales and sandstones 250
Soft or broken bedrock (excluding shale), and soft limestone 100
Soft shale 40

PNT

6.1.2 Rock Mass Rating (RMR) – may also be used to give net allowable
pressure as per Table-B. This will ensure settlement of raft
foundation up to 6 m thickness to be less than 12mm.
TABLE B NET SAFE BEARING PRESSURE BASED ON RMR
CLASSIFICATIO I II III IV V

Qns (t/m²) 600-448 440-288 280-151 145-90-58 55-45-40

6.1.3 Based on Core Strength of the Rock

Where the rock is sound the strength of the foundation
rock is generally much in excess of the design requirements,
provided the wall of the discontinuities is closed and they are
favorably oriented with respect to the applied forces.

In case of rock mass with favorable characteristics that

is, rock surface is parallel to the base of the foundation, the load has
no tangential component, the rock mass has no open discontinuities,
the safe bearing pressure should be estimated from the equation:
qs = qc N i
Where
qs = safe bearing pressure (gross),
qc = average uniaxial compressive strength of rock cores,
Ni = empirical coefficient depending on the spacing of
discontinuities
3  S / Bf

δ = thickness of discontinuities in cm,

6
ISO 9001:2008 Quality Certified Lab.
PNT

S = spacing of discontinuities in cm, and

Bf = footing width in cm

6.1.4 Correction to the Net Safe Bearing Pressure

For getting the allowable bearing pressure the safe
bearing pressure obtained from the Table-A of IS: 12070-1987 and
based on unconfined compressive strength, should be multiplied
with the correction factor(s) given below according to the geological
conditions. These corrections are not applicable for the classification
of RMR method given in Table-B (of IS: 12070-1987)

Allowances should be made for submerged conditions,

cavities and slopes as given below:
i) Submerged condition under water table
a) Rock with discontinuous joints with opening less ¾
than 1mm wide;
b) Rock with continuous joints with opening 1 to ¾ to ½
5 mm wide and filled with clay; and
c) Limestone / Dolomite deposit with major cavities ⅔ to ½
filled with soil
ii) Cavities
Major cavities inside limestone ½
(core recovery less than 70 percent)
iii) Slope
a) Fair orientation of continuous joints in the slope 1 to ½
b) Unfavorable orientation of continuous joints in slope ½ to 1/3
Note: Factor of safety of slope should be at least 1.20.

computed for shallow footing. The analysis is carried out for shear and
settlement failure considerations as per IS: 6403-1981, IS: 8009 Part-I
(1976) and IS: 1904-1986.

7.0 CALCULATION OF ALLOWABLE BEARING PRESSURE

7.1 Raft Foundation

GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR DETERMINATION OF SAFE BEARING

CAPACITY FOR CONSTRUCTION OF MULTISTOREY BUILDING
AT DEVASHISH CITY, BORKHERA, KOTA
(FOR RAFT TYPE FOUNDATION)
BH NO. : 1 TO 5

1.0 Analysis of Raft Foundation

The allowable bearing pressure of subsoil strata have been computed for Raft foundation of
size 17 X 43 m at a depth of 4m. The analysis has been carried out for shear and settlement
failure considerations as per IS : 6403-1981, IS:8009 Part-I (1976) and IS:1904-1986.

1.1 Shear Failure Consideration

The net safe bearing capacity of subsoil strata for raft foundation has been worked out. The
following equation for net ultimate bearing capacity has been used in clay.
qnu = c.Nc.sc.dc.ic eq…...1
Where:
c = Unit cohesion
Nc = Bearing capacity factor
qnu = Net ultimate bearing capacity
sc = Shape factor
dc = Depth factor
ic = Inclination factor
The shear strength parameter obtained from the laboratory testing are as follows :
c = 7.5 t/m²
Ø = 0

Shape factor
sc = 1.08 (For Raft Foundation)
Bearing Capacity factor
Nc = 5.14
Nq = 1
Nγ = 0
Depth factors
dc = 1 + 0.2 (Df/B) √NØ
dc = 1
(Depth factors has been considered 1.0 because the proper compaction of back filling at the
site can not be ensured.)

PNT

Inclination factors.
Ic = 1
Other Data Used
(Assuming fully submerged
γ' = 1.0 t/m3 condition)
Df = 4
F.O.S. = 2.5

The net ultimate bearing capacity is obtained from equation (1) and given as follows :
qnu = 7.5 X 5.14 X 1.08
= 41.63 t/m²

Therefore,
qnu 41.63
qns = --------- = -----------
FOS 2.5
= 16.65 t/m²

The value of net safe bearing capacity (for depth of the foundation = 4m.) obtained from
above equation has been obtained as 16.65t/m².

1.2 Settlement Consideration

The settlement of foundation on cohesive soil can be calculated from the equation as
follows : (IS-8009 Part 1 - 1976)
c c Ho po + Δp
s = ------------ log10 -----------
1 + eo po
Where:
s = Settlement
cc = Compressive index
Ho = Thickness of layer
eo = Void ratio
po = Initial over burden pressure
Δp = Increase in pressure

s= 0.160 X 1000 = 159.94 mm
L/B = = 2.53
Sqrt of (LXB) /Df = 6.76
Df / Sqrt of (LXB) = 0.148
Depth Factor, df = 0.96 From Fig.12 of IS:8009 (Part-I) - 1976
Regidity Factor, rf = 0.8

sf = s X df X rf = 122.83 mm

which is less than permissible settlement of 125mm.

1.3 Allowable Bearing Capacity
The allowable bearing pressure is the maximum bearing pressure which can be applied on
the soil such that two fundamental requirements i.e.(i) adequate factor of safety with
respect to shear failure (ii) and settlement is within permissible limits are to be satisfied.

The allowable bearing pressure at the depth of Df=4m has been recommended as
10.0t/m² for the design of raft foundation. .

BUILDING AT DEVASHISH CITY, BORKHERA, KOTA
BH-1
The analysis of bearing capacity has been carried out for rocky strata available at the site. Highly Weathered Rocky strata has been observed
at the depth of 16.00m. However, for highly weathered rock the safe load carrying capacity has been calculated as under. Therefore, length
of pile may be kept as depth upto rock level + socket length.
Load Carrying Capacity of Pile
A pile socketed into rock derives its capacity from end bearing and socket side resistance. The ultimate load carrying capacity may be
calculated from as per IRC:78-2014

Qu = Re + Raf = Ksp.qc.df.Ab + As Cus ………….1

Where
Qu = Ultimate capacity of pile socked into rock
Re = Ultimate end bearing
Raf = Ultimate side socket shear
Ksp = An empirical co-efficient whose value ranges from 0.3 to 1.2
qc = Average unconfined compressive strength of rock core
Ab = Cross-sectional area of base of pile

Length of socket
df = Depth factor 1 0.4 x
Dia of socket

However, value of df should not be taken more than 1.2

ISO 9001:2008 Quality Certified Lab.

As = Surface area of socket

Cus = Ultimate shear strength along the socket length = 0.225 √qc , subjected to maximum of 5 MPa.

Allowable Load Carrying Capacity, Qa is given as follows :

Qa = Qu / FOS = Re /3 + Raf /6 ……….2
