PTT330/3 PROCESS PLANT DESIGN I

DESIGN PROJECT TASK 1

Due: 2 March 2017 4.00 pm

Each task will be comprehensive and in some cases requires the students to use standard software
to perform the design.

A report will be submitted upon completion of each task and team report should be submitted on
due date. Late submission will not be accepted. The report will be written on the basis of team
work and every individual member in the team has to contribute.

PLEASE WRITE PROJECT TITLE AND SUPERVISOR NAME on the front page of the report.

The design task is divided into 5 part:-

1. Supply and demand for the product

 Importance of the process or product selected from Malaysian Chemical Industry
point of view.
 Report the production capacities & similar plants operating in
Malaysia/Asia/World.
 Report the projected demands/supply for next 10 years in the form of graph.

2. Process Alternatives

 Write down at least 3 different alternatives of the process scheme for the
production of the desired Chemical Product.
 Discuss about the alternatives in terms of green chemistry and sustainability,
environmental impact, energy consumption, flexibility of operation and safety
factors.
 Choice of the Process among the alternative supported by data, safety &
environmental issues and economic indicators, Market analysis, Flexibility and
Controllability

3. Critical Assessment Of The Process Chosen

 Choose the capacity of the plant based on literature background and provide the
justification. Give the correct reference and complete description of the process.
References must be quoted in the standard format.
 Process Chemistry, Reactions, Kinetics, Thermodynamics Data and other physical
and chemical Properties Data. (MSDS Sheet of all the raw materials, products and
by products in the process in terms of toxicity and flammability data).
 Recognize environmental (disposal of waste, if any), safety and health concerns.
 Present the review in a clear, structured and logical manner

4. Process Synthesis Structure And Analysis

 Input – output Structure with Feed and Product specifications, Price of all
product, by product and raw materials.
 Destination Codes and Component Classification, Utilities

5. Process Flow Diagram (PFD)

 Draw a block diagram based on process structure

 Show the Process Synthesis Flow Sheet after process integration if all the steps
needed for manufacturing of desired product
 Draw a process flow diagram (PFD) of the process using standard notations of the
equipment. PFD should be drawn on A3 size paper
