TRANSPORTATION

EFFICIENTLY
to come to school

Abstract
Transportation planning, or transport planning, has historically followed the rational
planning model of defining goals and objectives, identifying problems, generating
alternatives, evaluating alternatives, and developing plans.

INTRODUCCIÓN
Transportation planning is the process of defining future policies,
goals, investments, and designs to prepare for future needs to move people and
goods to destinations. As practiced today, it is a collaborative process that
incorporates the input of many stakeholders including various government agencies,
the public and private businesses. Transportation planners apply a multi-modal
and/or comprehensive approach to analyzing the wide range of alternatives and
impacts on the transportation system to influence beneficial outcomes.
Planners are increasingly expected to adopt a multidisciplinary approach, especially
due to the rising importance of environmentalism. For example, the use
of behavioural psychology to persuade drivers to abandon their automobiles and
use public transport instead. The role of the transport planner is shifting from
technical analysis to promoting sustainability through integrated transport policies.
The following key roles must be performed by transport planners:
● take account of the social, economic and environmental context of their work

● understand the legal, regulatory policy and resource framework within which
they work

● understand and create transport policies, strategies and plans that contribute
to meeting social, economic and environmental needs

● design the necessary transport projects, systems and services

● understand the commercial aspects of operating transport systems and

services

● know about and apply the relevant tools and techniques

● must be competent in all aspects of management, in particular

communications, personal skills and project management.
The UK Treasury recognises and has published guidance on the systematic
tendency for project appraisers to be overly optimistic in their initial estimates.
The Technical Process
Most regional transport planners employ what is called the rational model of
planning. The model views planning as a logical and technical process that uses the
analysis of quantitative data to decide how to best invest resources in new and
existing transport infrastructure.
The US process, according to Johnston (2004) and the FHWA and Federal Transit
Administration (FTA) (2007), generally follows a pattern which can be divided into
three different stages. Over the course of each of three phases, the metropolitan
planning organization (MPO) is also supposed to consider air quality and
environmental issues, look at planning questions in fiscally constrained way and
involve the public:
1- Preanalysis
The MPO considers what problems and issues the region faces and what
goals and objectives it can set to help address those issues. During this phase
the MPO also collects data on wide variety of regional characteristics,
develops a set of different alternatives that will be explored as part of the
planning process and creates a list of measurable outcomes that will be used
to see whether goals and objectives have been achieved.
2- Technical Analysis
The process involves much technical maneuvering, but basically the
development of the models can be broken down as follows. Before beginning,
the MPO collects enormous amounts of data. This data can be thought of as
falling into two categories: data about the transport system and data about
adjacent land use. The best MPOs are constantly collecting this data.
3- Post Analysis
This phase involves plan evaluation, programme implementation and
monitoring of the results. Johnston notes that for evaluation to be meaningful
it should be as comprehensive as possible. For example, rather than just
looking at decreases in congestion, MPOs should consider economic, equity
and environmental issues.

Getting Around Mexico City

(Advantages and Disavantages of transport)
We have many types of transport, but usually presents some advantages and
disadvantages:
Advantages and disadvantages
of metro
Advantages
 Today, the Metro has 12 lines
that cover practically the
entire Federal District and part
of the State of Mexico.
 It is also very economical. For the equivalent of about 22 cents, users can be
transported through the entire network, as long as they do not leave the
system.
 The service is free for children under 5 years old, adults over 60 and disabled
people.
 avoid traffic therefore travel longer distances in a shorter time.

Disadvantages
 During peak hours, wagons go full, especially in the downtown area of the
city. For users it is a real odyssey to board the train or get off at the station
they want.
 Sometimes the service is suspended due mainly to mechanical failures.
 Although informal commerce is prohibited, almost all trains and stations are
plagued with street vendors offering all kinds of merchandise, from pirated
discs to candy and books.
 Both men and women are sometimes victims of sexual harassment,
especially in the hours of greatest congestion. To remedy the problem, the
authorities have taken measures such as allocating wagons only for women
at certain times and also closing at night access to the wagons at the
beginning and end of the convoy.
 Frequently, passengers also suffer robberies on board trains and for this
reason the majority refrain from traveling with valuable belongings. The
authorities have installed video cameras to counteract the problem, although
without much success due to its magnitude.
 Another problem is vandalism and the evasion of the payment of passage.
Although there are usually policemen in all stations, some users manage to
enter the system without paying. Others, once inside, paint the cars with
aerosols and scratch glass and seats.
Advantages and
disadvantages of using
private car

Advantages
 One of the best
things about
having your own
car is not to
depend on
anyone, besides
not having to wait
for anyone.
 Another advantage
is that you should not follow any specific route or make a thousand stops.
 You travel more comfortable for example you can listening to your favorite
music. if the day is very hot you can put the air conditioner etc.

Disadvantages

 The costs of having a car: First when buying it, where the strong
investment begins. On the other hand, the price of gasoline, which
when using the vehicle every day, you must at least spend every 2
weeks .. And finally, the price of maintenance and revision, added to
the registration to be able to drive through the streets. So yes, these
are the disadvantages in terms of the economic.
 Where are you going to park the car? Let's be honest, not all jobs
have their own parking and it is increasingly difficult to park for free and
in safe places. That of having to leave even earlier to get a space, and
having to think about where to park early, is also a disadvantage.
 the cars with models
before 2009 enter the
program today does not
circulate
 there are many cars in
the Mexico City (more
than 4 million)
 because there are a lot
of cars a lot of pollution
is produced
 in the peak hours you
can delay up to 1 hour
Advantages and disadvantages of using bus

Advantages

 First of all the cost, in

Mexico City it is not very
expensive to do it. The
important thing is often to
have change or the exact
value to avoid problems.
Sure, these trips cost
less than what gasoline
would cost you.
 Another advantage is
that during the trip, you
have time for yourself.
Whether to read, study or
finish a presentation, to
sleep or even to make up
or comb your hair. Traveling by public transport allows you to give yourself
that time and use it however you want.
 do not worry about parking. Just get off, maybe near or who knows a few
blocks, and walk towards your destination. No parking to pay or risk to break
the glass and rob you for being parked in an unsafe place.

Disadvantages

 If the routes are long, they make many stops and sometimes they delay in
passing through the station where you are waiting.
 the street vendors go up
 there is the possibility of an assault
 some drivers drive in an uncontrolled manner and there is a possibility that
they will collide with another vehicle besides being rough
 in during peak hours the bus gets too crowded
Advantages and disadvantages of using bicycles

Advantages for your health

The use of a bicycle can improve your physical and

emotional health.

 It helps the functioning of the cardiovascular

system, tones muscles and improves lung
capacity.
 Reduces cholesterol levels in the blood.
 It helps improve motor coordination.
 It is an excellent aerobic exercise that
combats the risks of overweight and obesity.
 Reduces stress levels and improves mood.
 It can be an excellent alternative to unite
families around sports.
Advantages for the care of the environment
 A city with a high circulation of bicycles through its streets is definitely a friendly city
with the environment, as it helps to reduce the levels of environmental pollution and
its levels of carbon monoxide and dioxide, hydrocarbons and other particles that
favor pollution from air.

 The transport by bicycle is a totally ecological

practice because it promotes the reduction of
the mission of toxic gases for the environment
and the adoption of healthy lifestyles for people

Advantages for the care of the family economy

 When using the bicycle, you will also be saving
a lot of money, since you would not spend on
taxes, gasoline, parking, tolls, maintenance
expenses, payment of public transport service
tickets, etc.

Disadvantages

1. The insecurity in the streets is real or

perceived among the citizens.
2. The risk of accident when recognizing that
some trips must be made on roads with traffic
shared with cars.
3. The exposure of cyclists to vehicular
emissions in contaminated corridors.
4. The limitations of secure parking sites.
5. In some areas of the city, the deficiencies of the cycle routes (obstacles, steps, reduced
lighting, deterioration of the grade, connectivity limitations, lack of information to the cyclist).
6. In a city like Mexico City, climate is one of the variables that has the greatest influence on the
intention to use the bicycle. When the rains are strong, urban drainage problems limit their use
7. The absence of options that facilitate intermodality (possibility of transporting bicycles on SITP
buses, safe parking lots where you can leave the bike for more than a day due to rain situations).
8. The reduced load transport capacity
9. The exhibition of cargo or personal items during the tour.
10. In some segments of the population they have perceptions in which the cyclist is a person with
a low economic status or that the bicycle is an uncomfortable mode of transport that generates
physical wear or is not commensurate with daily activities.

Advantages and disadvantages of motorcycle

Advantages
 It is the fastest transport option in the city (however, in some cases the speed of travel is
associated with risky or illegal maneuvers on the roads).
 With the commercial strategies of
suppliers and banks, the motorcycle
is an affordable investment.
 It allows to choose different routes to
the same destination.
 It is economical with respect to other
motorized transport options.
 The motorcycle demands little
parking space.
 It is a financially viable private
transport option.
 It can be used as a means of work.
 It is competitive against public
transport when more than 3 trips are
made per day
 Its maintenance is cheap.
 Functional in different topographical
conditions.

Disadvantages

 Risk of accident, since the user is exposed.

 Conflict on the road with other vehicles, even with the bicycle.
 Insecurity in the streets.
 Limitations of secure parking
problems of circulation due to the poor
state of urban drainage during rain.
 The city has not defined a specific
infrastructure for motorcyclists.
 Exposure to rain, unlike the bicycle, is
not a situation that limits or persuades
the use of this vehicle.
 Conflict with other motorcyclists.
 The exposure of motorcyclists to
vehicle emissions with health effects
has been identified in some surveys
 conducted by the University of La Salle.
 The poor condition of the road network represents risks of accidents for motorcyclists.

Objective
Make a good transport project with the one that already exists, focusing
on the transport that reaches the CENLEX UST students, making the
transport more efficient.
