 The principle of nitrogen production
The operation of the NITROPOWER nitrogen generators is based on the principle of the
pressure swing adsorption (PSA). The nitrogen generator consists of a number of steel
absorbers filled with a special carbon adsorbent. The adsorbent acts as a molecular sieve.
The size of pores of the specially prepared adsorbent makes it possible to absorb mostly
oxygen. Thus, the air passing through the adsorber is enriched in nitrogen.

The pre-dried and pre-treated compressed air makes its way to the generator. Here
it passes through the adsorber from bottom to top. The nitrogen molecules pass via
adsorber to a product line as they are low permeable to the pores of the adsorbent while
oxygen is accumulated in the adsorbent.

The adsorbent’s capacity for oxygen absorption is limited. So, the NITROPOWER
generator automatically changes the operation mode of the absorbers. One set of the
absorbers accumulates oxygen, and the second set of the absorbers is regenerated.
During regeneration, the pressure in the adsorber goes down and the accumulated
oxygen is released into the atmosphere. The adsorbers are periodically switched back
and forth to provide non-stop nitrogen production.
