INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Sex is human need, every human need sex to gain their sexual pleasure. Sex is part
of human life. There are several ways to gain sexual pleasure which is normal as people do
or deviate or sadism. Based on American Psychiatric Association sadism is gain sexual
pleasure by seeing their sexual partner being hurt, but women who would include in this
case is quite small. There will be a side that include as the victim of sexual sadism disorder.
Sexual sadism can be distinguished as type of rape. There always cause of sexual sadism
disorder which is like trauma or something like torture that interrupt psychological of
someone. Trauma can change psychologist of someone and difficult to heal and solve it.
Experiencing traumatic event cause suffer from severe and long-term impairment (Yule,
2001).

Sexual sadism disorder is the condition that enjoying sexual arousal in response to
the extreme pain or suffering. One of the novels that discussed about gaining sexual
pleasure by sexual sadism disorder is Fifty Shade of Gray and Fifty Shade Darker by E. L.
James. The novel tells about the main character who have sexual sadism disorder toward
Anastasia Steel. In this novel the main character Christian gray showed his sexual pleasure
by hurting or suffering his sexual partner Anastasia steel.

Anastasia Steel is female protagonist character in this novel. She is willful and shy
female; she is falling in love with the main character Christian Gray so much. She wants
to have a special love relationship with Christian Gray. Christian Gray interest with
Anastasia Steel at the first time they meet and look like want to have some love relationship
with her.

In this thesis the writer is interest to discuss about the main character Christian Gray
especially the cause of his Sexual sadism disorder. This thesis analyzes Christian Gray’s
characteristic of sexual sadism disorder and also analyze causes of sexual sadism of
Christian Gray.
B. Problem Formulation
1. How the character and characterization of the main characters in the novel Fifty Shade of
Gray and Fifty Shade Darker by E. L. James?
2. How Sexual Activities Committed by Christian and how Anna’s response in the novel fifty
Shade of Gray and Fifty Shade Darker by E. L. James?
3. Does trauma or bad experiences during childhood have negative impact on adulthood as
seen in the novel Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades of Darker?

C. Objectives of the Study

The writer write this thesis in purpose to analyse how Christian Gray the main
character describe as sadist in the novel and what the cause is. The first objective is how
character and characterization of Gray’s character that indicates as sexual sadism
disorder, how Anastasia Steel response gray’s sexual activity. The second objective is the
writer analyze how sexual activities by Christian Gray and how Anna’s response of
Gray’s sexual activity toward her. The last objective is the writer try to find out does
gray’s trauma or bad experience during cildhood have negative impact on adulthood in
the novel Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades of Darker.
