Topic- Effective Teaching Methods Used to Teach Second Language to Youth

at Higher Educational Institutes

Abstract.

This study attempts to encompass a deep analysis on effective second language teaching methods
(with special reference to technological methods) which can be used to enhance the English
language acquisition in students at higher educational institutes in Sri Lanka. Special attention
has been given to the technological assistance which could be used while teaching English to any
level of students in the country.

In addition the researcher aims to find out the reasons behind the lack of English knowledge of
the students at the higher education level, in majority of Sri Lankan higher educational institutes.

For this study both qualitative and quantitative research methodology is employed. The
qualitative data includes several interviews with the students and the lecturers at these institutes.
The quantitative data is collected via a questionnaire that was distributed among the students.

The researcher intends to introduce new and effective methods to the teachers/ lecturers of
English. A regular exposure to the language via technological assistance together with ample
chances to communicate verbally, present themselves, associate with peers, engage in social
activities and advanced reading writing opportunities are expected to provide adequate chances
to improve the standards of the students. The research is supposed to create awareness to the
teaching and learning parties.

The methods are assumed to be helpful and efficient to render better acquisition in youth who
are interested in improving their English language communication expertise.
