Research Topic / Area of Study Physician Assistant “How Physician Assistants Impact the
Medical Field”
Connection to research paper Research paper focused on how Physician Assistants (PA)
impact the medical field by working alongside a doctor in order
to provide the best medical care for a patient. They offer great
medical care at a lower cost. Physician Assistants can work in
any specialty. I am shadowing a nurse practitioner who works
under a Psychiatrist. Nurse Practitioners and Physicians
Assistants hold similar roles in the medical field, but a PA has
more responsibility/liability when it comes to patients. I will
explain how a PA working in the field of Psychiatry can help
patients suffering from mental illnesses.
Goal of product / what problem or My goal is to raise students’ awareness for depression and
need solved or addressed anxiety since it seems to be an ignored concept in school. I want
them to know what the early symptoms are for both illnesses in
order for them to treat these symptoms immediately. I will teach
the students different ways of treating depression and anxiety,
and how a healthy lifestyle can help prevent mental illnesses.
Estimated time to complete I will need a few weeks to come up with my lesson plans for an
8th grade class. Once I have my lesson plans ready, I will need
to set a date in order to teach an 8th grade class.
People who will assist (if applicable) ● Liz Watson, Nurse Practitioner (my mentor) will help
give me the information I need in order to conduct my
lesson plan.
● Ms. Miller’s 8th grade English class.
Estimated cost / investment I plan on purchasing candy as a prize for the top five winners of
Kahoot. I will also purchase a stress relieving coloring book in
order to bring coloring pages for the class to color. I will provide
the colored pencils as well. The cost will be about $33.00.
What will judges see at I will bring in the lesson plan I created to show judges what I
presentation? (evidence of work taught the students. I plan on videotaping some parts of my
and development) teaching, so I will make a short video and show it to the judges. I
will also bring a copy of the quiz I made for the students to take,
and provide a graph with their results. I also will bring a few of
the students’ coloring pages from the coloring activity.
Personal stretch (area of growth) Attending a full day of work at a business office with adults
pushed me out of my comfort zone. I am used to being
surrounded by my peers or people younger than me. Talking to
adults helped improve my communication skills. I felt
comfortable asking my mentor questions. Standing in front of a
class and teaching a full lesson will help me overcome my fear
of public speaking. I discovered how emotionally draining it is
to work in the field of Psychiatry, meaning it depressed my
mood when hearing the problems people are facing on a daily
basis.
Product Description: I will create a lesson plan for one, 90 minute eighth grade class. I will make a
PowerPoint presentation as the main way to teach the students the lesson on Psychiatry. The PowerPoint
will not be too wordy, and I will engage the students in discussions in order to not lose their attention and
focus. I will first introduce myself, why I am teaching their class/Pride Project information, and what a
Physician's Assistant is. Then, I will introduce the coloring activity to the class where I give them a
coloring page, colored pencils, put on relaxing background music, and let them color for about 15
minutes. After those 15 minutes are up, I will debrief the activity and explain how coloring can be used
as a relaxation technique. Next, I will get into the main lesson, which focuses on depression and anxiety. I
will start off with depression and define it, list symptoms, explain how a person can become depressed,
and list treatments. Then I will explain anxiety and define it, list symptoms, explain the different types of
anxiety, and treatments. I will then show the class two prompts and ask them to determine which prompt
portrays anxiety and which prompt portrays depression. After I teach my main lesson, the students will
play the 20 question Kahoot I created as a review/study guide for their quiz I will be giving at the end of
class. The top five winners of Kahoot will win a box of candy. After Kahoot, I will teach the students a
mental disorder they may have never heard of, which is Schizophrenia. I find Schizophrenia very
interesting and found a great simulation video depicting the symptoms of the disorder, so I will have a
mini lesson on it. I will define Schizophrenia, explain how one can become Schizophrenic, list the
different types of symptoms, and treatments. I will then show the 8 minute long video simulation of
Schizophrenia. At the end of class, I will give the students a 13 question quiz on everything I taught
(Physician's Assistant, Depression, Anxiety, Schizophrenia). I am videotaping parts of the class, so I will
make a video as part of my product to present to the judges. I also plan on bringing visuals such as some
of the students’ coloring pages, my lesson plan, and the quiz the students took.
