Tutorial # 1, Chapter 1
Tutorial Question

1. A cylindrical tank weighs 75 N when empty. When filled with water the total weight is
1600 N. Determine the height of the tank if the diameter is 50 cm.

2. The space between parallel plates kept 5mm apart is filled with oil of dynamic viscosity
0.2 Pa.s. What is the shear stress on the lower fixed plate, if the upper one is moved with
a velocity of 1.50 m/s?

3. The velocity distribution for the flow of a Newtonian fluid between two wide, parallel
plates (see Fig. below) is given by the equation

3V y y
u= [1 − (h)2 ] h u
2
h

where V is the mean velocity. The fluid has a viscosity of 0.04 lb.s/ft2. Here, V = 2 ft/s
and h= 0.02 in. determine: (a) the shearing stress acting on the bottom all, and (b) the
shearing stress acting on a plane parallel to the walls and passing through the centerline
(mid line)

4. The velocity distribution in a viscous flow over a plate is given by

u = 4y-y2 for y ≤ 2m
where u = velocity in m/s at a point distant from the plate. If the coefficient of dynamic
viscosity is 15 poise, Determine the shear stress at y = 0 and at y= 2.0 m.

5. Two large plane surfaces are 1 inch apart, and the gape contains a liquid having a
dynamic viscosity coefficient of 0.0200 Ibfs/ft2. A thin plate of cross sectional area 4.00
ft2 is to be through the gap at a constant velocity of 1.00 ft/s. The location of plate will
have to be such that it is 1/3 inch from one of the surfaces. Neglecting edge effects,
estimate the force required for pulling the plate as above.

6. A body weighing 100 lb. with a flat surface area of 3ft2 slides down a lubricated inclined
plane making a 35° angle with the horizontal. For viscosity of 0.002089 lb∙s/ft2 and a
body speed of 3.5 ft/s, determine the lubricant film thickness.

7. Derive the following equation for capillary rise:

2
h cos
gr
Where, h is capillary rise, σ is surface tensions, θ is contact angle, r is radius of tube

8. A. 1.9 mm-diameter tube is inserted into an unknown liquid hose density is 960 kg/m3,
and it is observed that the liquid rise 5 mm in the tube, making a contact angle of 15°.
Determine the surface tension of the liquid.

9. The surface tension of mercury and water at 60°C are 0.47 N/m and 0.0662 N/m,
respectively. Which of these two fluids would has a higher capillary-height changes, if
the fluids are in contact with air in a glass tube of radius 0.30 mm? Use θ = 130° for
mercury, and 0° for water; γ = 132.3 kN/m3 for mercury, and 9.650 kN/m3 for water.

10. A clean tube of internal diameter 3 mm is immersed in a liquid with a coefficient of

surface tension = 0.48 N/m. The angle of contact of the liquid with the glass can be
assumed to be 130°C. The density of the liquid is 13600 kg/m3. What would be the level
of the liquid in the tube relative to the free surface of the liquid outside the tube?

11.A needle has a length of 3.2 cm. When place gently on the surface of the water (σ= 0.073
N/m) in a glass, the needle will float if it is not too heavy. What is the weight of the
heaviest needle that can be used in this demonstration?
